Garage
Might as well do a 4-bolt conversion. Factory caps are matched to the block they were born with. Swapping 2-bolt caps will require nearly as much effort and expense as doing a 4-bolt conversion.

I THOUGHT OF DOING THE 4 BOLT MAIN CONVERSION BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE #1 & #5 2 BOLT CAPS TO BEGIN WITH, I HAVE NOTHING, IF I HAD THE TWO AT LEAST, THEN I COULD BUY THE OTHER THREE 4 BOLT AFTERMARKET CAPS. CHECKING WHERE THE FOURTH SLAYED BOLTS WOULD GO FOR EACH CAP, THERE'S NOT MUCH MEAT ON THE WEBBING TO WORK WITH MAKING ME THINK IT MIGHT WEAKEN THE WEBBING RATHER THAN STRENGTHEN THE BLOCK. SO IN THE END I'M THINKING OF JUST LINE BORING THE 2 BOLT MAINS THAT I FIND, WHICH SHOULD BE GOOD TO SAY 600-700HP. CAR WILL BE FOR MAINLY FOR STREET AND SHOWS WITH A FEW RUNS OUT AT THE TRACK. I COULD NOT FIND ANY IN ANY BONE YARDS AROUND HERE AND HAVE CHECKED E-BAY AND CAME UP WITH ZERO FOR SALE SO FAR.

AHH, IT PAYS TO DIG A LITTLE MORE. I FOUND ANOTHER BOX WITH A BUNCH OF WINDSOR ENGINE PARTS, IN THAT SAME BOX SOME HOW OVER THE YEARS THE SET OF FIVE 2 BOLT MAINS CAPS FOR MY 460 BLOCK WERE IN THERE. NOW THAT I FOUND THEM, I CAN SEE WHERE THE MATING SURFACE TO THE BLOCK ON THE CAPS HAS SOME RUST, NOT REALLY REALLY BAD. CAN THAT MACHINED SURFACE ON ALL THE CAPS BE MILLED MAYBE A FEW THOUSANDS JUST TO CLEAN THEM UP? I WOULD THINK IF ANY METAL WAS REMOVED AT ALL, IT WOULD NO LONGER BE TRUE ROUND AND WOULD REQUIRE TO LINE BORED OR HONED MAKING PERFECTLY ROUND MAIN CAPS AND BLOCK. I LIGHTLY WIRE BRUSHED THEM SO THEY NOW JUST LOOK A TINY BIT PITTED ON THAT MACHINED SURFACE OF THE CAP TO BLOCK. WHAT IS NORMALLY DONE TO CAPS LIKE THESE TO RE-CON THEM SO YOU KNOW FOR SURE THEY ARE 100% RE-USE-ABLE BESIDES MAG-FLUXING THEM ALL? I PLAN TO BUY A STROKER KIT FOR THE ENGINE ANYWAY, JUST TRYING TO GET ALL PIECES TOGETHER AND DO SOME PREP WORK BEFORE TAKING ALL TO THE MACHINE SHOP. YOUR SUGGESTIONS OR CONCERNS APPRECIATED...THX

any competent machine shop, should be able to trim the caps, and align hone the bore for you. Good luck with your build.

x2 and if it they have to take enough off? There are timing sets that are .005" shorter for blocks that have had to be line honed more than normal!

If you're going to be stupid? You'd better be tough!
