A/C-Heater Delete

I am inthe middle of removing the A/C-Heater box from the firewall of my Galaxie... and covering it with either sheetmetal or aluminum . Anyone know if there are any minimum thickness requirements, and what they might be for the different materials? Do they even check for this when teching a car at the track?

Thanks.
Tom
