TCI glide adapter and PMGR starter

Was helping a friend thrash on his car Sun. Starter drive tore the top off the teeth and was making an incredible noise when trying to start.
He may already have damaged his flexplate beyond salvage but.
THe very top of the teeth were worn off, seemed to me that the starter drive was not meshing deeply enough with the flexplate. Checked with a buddy at a starter shop and he told me there was 2 nosepcs for a PMGR, a manual and an automatic. The length is the same but the relationship of the drive offset to the locating diameter was different. Would the other nosepc to the one being used be any better? The starter locating diameter fit well in the plate so no way to push it over.
It is a TCI glide adapter used as a midplate if that helps.
