msd ignition what to buy

hi all
i want to purchase my ignition system parts now while our dollar is strong.
i am building a 521 p51 headed,solid roller mtr for street/strip use. pump gas mtr.
i want to use all msd gear. i already have the distributor i will have to check the part number of it to let you know if needed.(been a long time since i looked at it).
i was looking at the msd 6al-2. is this a good thing or is there some thing better to use. like a 7al. i looking for advice on this stuff. pros and cons. so i can make a good decision on what i use to make a good system for my vehicle.

For street and strip use the 6AL-2 would be just fine for running pump gas. The regular old 6AL is also good. The 6AL-2 sends a bit more spark to the plug (measured in milijoules). The 7AL sends even more but that is more of a racing application where you are dumping a lot more fuel into the cylinders and that can necessitate needing the hotter spark. For what you are doing the 6AL or the 6AL-2 would be just fine. I don't think there is the need for the extra expense for the 7AL. But then again it all depends on what you want to do with this as well. Some of the boxes in the 7AL series has extra features (2 step rev limiters, etc) that may come in handy if you are using nitrous or are trying to take a bit of power away when you are launching off the line. The 6AL boxes can still be used but if you need the extra features later then you end up buying additonal boxes later and have to wire them in seperate.

For instance... I use a 6AL box. I didn't have nitrous when I first got started. Now that I run a decent shot of nitrous I had to wire in their start/retard box. So when I hit the nitrous it automatically retards the timing for me so I don't have to reset the timing every time I want to use the nitrous. So I always am running optimum timing no matter if I'm using the nitrous or not. I do not currently use the start retard control on that 2nd box but you never know. Maybe in the future.

I guess the short answer is read about the features of each of the boxes and decided what you need and buy that one. Because in my opinion... They are all high quality equipment. It just depends on your needs. Hope this helps..

thanks for the reply. so if i understand you correctly the 7al has the extra features built in. i think it is probably money well spent for future applications then. i will do more reading on them. i was told 7al boxes would not work for my application. but no reasons as to why.

Take a look at the 6 Digital boxes they have some nice features i.e two steps, start retard and a retard for nitrous with out the cost of the 7 box.

I think the 6AL-2 digital has a 2 step rev control but I'm not sure about the start retard or regular retard control for nitrous applicaitons. But I think he is right though. The 6AL-2 is a great little newly designed unit. It would be plenty of spark for what you are running (pump gas). You could spend more money but you really don't need to. If you did need a retard control later it is another $130 I think and that still doesn't add up to over $500 for the basic 7 series box.

i used the digital 6 this year and loved it. 2 rpm limits and a start retard plus an adjustable retard for power adders

That 6AL-2 does look like a great deal. I didn't realize that it had the retard controls built in and you don't have to use the pills. I think I may need do get one of those just for the hotter spark and I can dump the pills. It seems that after every upgrade I have to buy another set of pills because I don't have what I need.

ok its down to the digital 6 or the 6al-2.
with the digital 6 is the unit manually programmable or do you have to hook it up to a pc to set it up. it seems to have a few more features.
is it a user friendly as the 6al-2.

After you posted the 6AL-2 stuff I did a bunch of reading over the weekend.

IMO the differences are:

6AL-2 is very flexible with the laptop programing; basically you can tune the crap out of it. It is similar to the 7 series for less money.

You can set the tune for the whole power band in the box and just lock out the Dizzy

The feature is the launch RPM settings that where of most interest to me.
Also the ability to custom tune each rev limit in software.

The Dig 6 box has the 2 step rev limiter (by dial, no PC needed)
A start retard and a retard for power adders, and these are set by dial as well.

So the difference is do you want to have this much control? If you need it it or will use it. It is worth the extra cash if you just need them. the Dig 6 featrues it is cheaper and easier.

I am still on the fence, most likley I will stick with the Dig 6.

You can download the software and try it at MSD's site. It looks cool.
