Chassis Dyno

Brought a friends Cutlass with a "fresh" 454 and radical cam, intake, carb and headers in for a few pulls on the heartbreaker. Best the car would do was 239hp and 305 torque. He was told by the seller this was a 500hp engine. He wanted proof.
So my question is this. I have a bone stock 1970 Tbird with 429 and C6. I recall a video from a few years back of a chassis dyno pull on a stock 429 in a 70 bird. They showed something like 395hp and over 400 torque.
After yesterday, I am thinking that had to be a hoax. Accounting for drivetrain loss, a fresh stock 429 in a fresh drivetrain should be making only about 280hp at the wheels. Is it possible to make up this 100 hp gap with some tuning magic or was this some other kind of magic?
