Question 295/55/15 tires on 8" rims?

Want some big tires on my '64 Galaxie. Changed stock rear end to disc brakes so I will have room for the bigger tires (3.70 TractionLok w/31 spline Mozier axles). Have 245/60/15 now on 8" aluminum American Racing Wheels (3.75" back set). The tires are centered almost exactly in the center of the wheel wells. Want to get 295/55/15 MT ET Street Radials, car is dry weather only. Have compared a lot of tires and these are the ones I like, 27.8 tall, 10.9" tread, 12" section width. Car is a street car, 466 w/475-500 horsepower, C-6 w/ shift kit, that will see 8 to 10 trips to the strip (1/8 mile) every year. The section width is what is bothering me. Have about 13.2" and according to my measurements if I buy 10" rims of the same type (discountinued but I can still get them) they will be too close to the outside fender well. I really like the wheels and don't really want to buy new ones, which would open a new can of worms anyway. According to the tire spec sheet I can use 8" to 10.5" rims.
Question is...will 8" rims be OK with this big of tire? I realize they are on the low end of the recommended list but still want to be safe street or strip. Another thing, are they too much tire for me horsepower output? I don't really plan on running a small amount of air anyway. Plan to drive to and from strip, about 60 miles away.
Thanks for any input.

Yes 295 will be ok, i had bfg 295X50X15 on a weld star 8 inch rims drove it on the street without any issues. If you go the 10 inch rim the section width will increase, all depends how much room you have.

Would you please measure it for me, if it was only 11 3/4 on a 10" I might do some figuring.
Thanks.

good morning i measure the tire its 11 3/8" on a 8" rim. what surprise me is that my 275x60x15 are 11 1/8" measure this morning. the 295 does have a wider tire patch 275 is 9" 295 is 9 1/2". i was trying to get more tire for better hook but the i think i will stay with the 275. r hp power is very close mind is 480hp run 11.45 @116 #3870 with driver my 60' are a best of 1.51 but stay around 1.57. i was hoping the bigger tire would help when using nitrous my 60' are down 1.8s but mph is up 10.98 @125 mph

Thanks for the info. What brand tire are you running? I was going to run the Mickey Thompson ET street radial. The Jegs catalog and the MT site has the 295/55R15 on a 9.5" rim has them listed as 12.0 section width and 10.9" tread, 27.8 diameter.
