paint from Summit Racing. It has only been on my headers a little over a month but looks good so far.I didn't get any bad smell or smoke off them when i first fired it either.I had my cousin blast my headers then sprayed away with the VHT it was $9.25 a can and i used the white paint.
I built a few sets of headers over the last 5 years and I always have used the Krailon Barbecue 1200 deg. Flat black paint .. it's been on my latest set for 2 years now.. and still looks good.
I use one $2.99 can per header using the mutiable coating technique I learned as a kid .. Light coats just a lot of them letting them dry just enough in between to keep it from running.
Even thou the paint is flat black after it drys over night if you take a piece of paper toweling and rub the tubes down they'll shine up some and it seem to help the paint stay on the pipes.
VHT has curing directions for off or on the vehicle on the
can.I used the on vehicle directions.Run at idle 10 minutes let cool for 20 minutes,Run at idle 20 minutes let cool for 20 minutes,Run under normal operating conditions for 30 minutes.Finish is not chemical resistant until fully cured.
Don't make the mistake I did. I used the VHT, and didn't have a means of baking them, and it was quite a while before I was able to get them on a running engine. The un-cured VHT header paint is quite messy to handle.
Techline coatings offers the same ceramic coating that header manufacturers use. I used it on a custom exhaust setup . Baked some stuff in small oven, the rest I let the exhaust bake itself on.
Sandblast and then degrease first are a must. THIN coats, I actually use a airbrush, it has held up very well to outdoors conditions for over a year.
Ceramic coating is the only way to go. Paint is a band-aid. Paint does nothing to help the inside where the rust is most prevelant. I know it is not the cheapest, but vs. the cost and the greif it is a good value. Tim
VHT has been good so far i bead blasted them and baked them with a kero torpedo heater many times before i put them on. I always wondered if gun blueing would work my brother had a 69 ss chevelle 396 and the roll bar was coated with gun blueing and it looked great for years and probley still does i've reblued guns before and its a tuff finish.
