I am looking to take a 1978 460 and am hoping to be able to get it to run as good as a 1968 460. Any suggestions on how or what I should do or get ?

I also have a chance to get a 429 with the Dove heads. I am thinking about taking the heads and pistons and putting them in the 460. Wound the cam and timing chain and gears also go into the 460 ?

What is or where is this 78 460 from?
Yes D0VE heads will work and give you more HP. Not hundreds more, but more. If you also have a 78 EPA intake, get rid of that to. Even an earlier cast iron 4bbl or Performer will be better.
If you already have a 460, don't destroke it to a 429. Rebuild the 460 and replace the cam, lifters, timing set with early "straight up" timing gears. Used cams/lifters are not a good thing to put into another engine unless you know the whole history of them and the lifters were kept in order they came out of.
Port out the exhaust bump on the D0VE heads and do a 3 angle valve job, new springs and seals, resurface and leave them at that.
