Hello guys, I have a 1983 f-150 4x4 with a 460 I was told it was out of a 1974 galaxy but when I looked at the numbers on the block it is a D1VE-A2B and the heads are D2VEAA. So then I looked up how to identify a ford big block it comes up as a 1971 Lincoln engine made on January 2nd but the heads don't match up with the year could someone haved changed the heads? Also I heard the engine for 1971 makes 390 HP and 450 TQ but the heads are from 1972 would the HP and TQ be different? any help would be great thanks.

I saw on another website that those D2VE heads are the worst ones Ford made. "Beware as this is the only year of the large round OPEN combustion chamber design. Chamber size is near 100 cc's. They are prone to detonation". Also in 1972 the power dropped to 215hp/300 tq.

What is the date code in the block valley area?

1M23 would be an example of oct 23rd 1971

The A2B revision on your block suggests that it is a later 70's engine.

Have you looked at the pistons?

1970 and 1971 460's were 365 HP GROSS and about 320 as installed in the vehicle.

The post 1971 numbers are SAE NET hp hence the large drop over and above the loss of static c/r.

I believe its a a2b and I haven't looked at the pistons, I'm trying to figure out why they would have 1972 heads and a 1974 intake on a 1971 block.

Maybe somebody slapping together some spare parts to make a complete engine? At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. It's a good block (they all are), the heads should be hauled for scrap, and the intake is only good for towing.

You didn't say what you want to use it for, but you'll have to figure out what crank and pistons you have before doing anything else.

Its mainly going to be an everyday driver but I may get a beater car, I am probably going to put a weiand stealth intake and a speed demon 750cfm carb on it and that should wake it up. Its already got a performance exhaust and headers. Then when I have the engine rebuilt I'll put a nice cam and possibly heads depending on how much money I have Lol. Right now its got 4.10 gears.

Jake, double check the casting # on the heads and make sure they are not D2OE if they are D2VE the previous replies have been right on the mark your engine is either a 72 engine that was swapped into the car or someone swapped 72 heads onto the engine.Having had a 72 continental years ago that had those heads on them I would agree they are the worst heads ever put on a 429-460,they had a fully open combustion chamber with no quench areas like the 351M-400,and like them were prone to ping under almost all conditions. It also needed to be left in gear when you shut it off or it wanted to run on,thankfully ford immediately came out with the D3VE the next year. After swapping on a set of D3VE's the car had much better manners and seemed to have better power to boot.If by slim chance the casting # is D2OE then those maybe original to the galaxy and it was a cop car and you may be the proud owner of a 1974 460 PI
