IF IT AINT ONE THING...

...its another

Was on a shakedown drive when I started hearing a loud clunking noise coming from the rear end....

Thought a shock was broken until rear end started wiggling around :nerd:

Got home n found the front passenger side ladder bar mount bushing disintegrated.

WTF now!???

Had a spare laying around n got it back together.

It will hold me till I get a new bushing, but I like the one I put in...solid no rubber to flex.

Better this happened now than at the track-disaster averted this time!

On a good note...I hooked up the heat in the car...nice n toasty now...ha!

Hey bajarick
Long time. I will be out this weekend with the Tbird. I have been out once this season with the new 523 and went 5.58 off the trailer spinning hard right into high gear. Then as you know its been raining and I was sick a few weeks back so I could not make it. I will look for you this weekend to look your ride over..

FINALLY.....

........made some runs at Capital this Saturday :surprise:

Made four runs total....the last run was a good one until I had a brain fart and let up at the 1/8 mile.

Technically, I won the race cause my cousin red lighted, but Im looking at the performance and the car was on its way to a potential 130 mph run (or a least a best time of say 10:28 or so).

Comparing the time slip from my previous best run in 2015 (timeslip on left), I was on par to make a nice run.

HEY FOLKS..!

What's going on over there?......D
Whats up D!

Been a long time for me.

The Z car is just sitting around the last year or so.

Last November I was out putting gas in it and get into a skirmish with a Challenger after that I heard something making bad noises from the trans or something - thought I had bent a push rod or rocker but after checking that didn't appear to be the case.

Planning to continue the investigation over the winter.

In the mean time I finished the restoration of my 13 ft vintage race boat.

I had it out a Regatta in Southern MD (Leonardtown Boat Races) - lots of fun!

What motor? Hey,don't kill yourself in that thing! A friend acquired a 16 footer about like yours a while ago. Don't remember the make or know much about it but it had a Merc Bridgeport,2.4 or 2.5L Scared the crap out of me at 8,000 RPM with a 28 Chopper. Got kicked off the lake by the game warden. Never ran it again.

Hey Thermod,

My boat is relatively safe compared to what you were riding in - I think that Bridgeport is about 175 hp.

This boat fits into the Sport G category - 69 cubic inch motors, 75-85 hp, 13 ft minimum length.

I have an 80hp Mercury on the back - 14 x 26 cleaver prop.

Most of the boats run about 60-65 mph.....still dialing mine in at 56-57 mph.

Vintage racing is not really racing either....there is no winner or loser, just 3-5 laps of fun each heat.

I attached a short video of me testing some engine and trim height adjustments -click on the words you tube to play the clip.

My Zephyr is supposed to be the tow vehicle - lol !

That looks like a blast! I love fast outboards. Been messing around with them for years which led to a bunch of free work on a lot of my friend's boats. Guys shell out big money for hi perf bass boats but have no clue on props, setup,or basic maintenance.
You might try raising your motor up on the transom a little and going with less trim to level it out some. Be less susceptible to chine walk.

Hey Thermod - I've always had a boat in my life - love to go a little faster too.

I can get most things done on a motor myself, but far from expert.

There is a group on Face Book called Vintage Outboard Tunnel Hulls for more pics.

I'm also in Vintage Outboard Mercury Fanatics (on FB).

Do you post anything about boats anywhere?

By the way - would love to go up a little more with my motor, but need a nose cone for water pick up, and a bit more transom height.

I agree the trim is way too high - there was zero wind that day and I was trying the third hole up on my trim settings (need power trim) - would never run that much trim on a normal basis.

My prop is a 14 x 26 Ron Hill Cleaver, I'm running it about 1 inch up into the tunnel which is not enough for that prop.

The prop seems to be sucking the back of the boat down into the water at speed - I think this is because its being run too deep for a cleaver.

I think the rotating blade coming out of the water is pulling the back of the boat down rather than the blade entering the water providing stern lift.

I want to be high and flat at speed with this boat.

I would like to see more rooster tail from the engine rather than the sides of the boat (like whats happening to me in the video).

In the attached pic the flat board indicates the bottom of the sponsons, and the T square is flat on top of the board - you can see the propshaft is about even with the bottom of the sponsons.

In the video, I raised the motor up about 3/4 of an inch from this position. - don't have enough transom to go any higher.

Disregard the bronze prop - not used.

Yeah, with the way it's set up,you are sucking water up in the tunnel which is slowing you down. BTW,we just got done with a 79 Fairmont drag car,521,650 horse. Hope to run as good as you did next spring. I have build pics from start to finish but so far,too lazy to get them posted.Only boat forum I'm on is Bass Boat Central. There are a couple of good Merc wrenches on there. Live around 3 blocks from the Missouri river so been around boats all my life. If I win the lottery, will buy a Stroker bass boat with the new Merc 400 4 stroke.Should run over 100.It would be just a go fast deal, got a 19 ft tin boat with a 200 on it for fishing. Cars and boats,fishing...big $$$ No golf as of yet.PM me your motor yr and serial no and I might have a cheap trim setup if you're interested.

That Fairmont sounds cool - Ill look for some updates.

Post a few picks - not all.

I would like to have a Stoker Tunnel - like the old Mod VP boats.

100 mph sounds like a handfull....talk about me being carefull....ahem, cough, clear throat...

My other boat is an 89 Baja 186 Sport, 200 Rude, nose cone, jack plate, 26 inch Raker...will do 70 on a good day.

Boat is built heavy like the Checkmates...1200 lbs bare.

Put 200 on a Hydrostream and you instantly in the mid 80's.

BTW - I was also fishing....see the rod in the back of the boat....
