I have a 62 Ford Galaxie that has a 352 that needs rebuilt. I was told that it is the same block as the ford 390 I don't know or I wouldn't be asking stupid questions!!!
I need to know if it is possible to stroke this engine. I have seen stroker kits for the 390 but not for the 352. If I have to rebuild it anyway I might as well go with more cubes if I can.
I have a 460 that I was planning on using but am not sure I want to change that much on the car.

It's the same block as a 390 and as I recall the same bore. The 390 had a longer stroke. Nev's

different...

It's a different bore and stroke from a 390. 352 = 4 inch bore X 3.5 inch stroke. Same as a 351 W or C. They called the later stuff 351 to avoid confusion. 390 = 4.050 inch bore X 3.78 inch stroke. 428 = 4.13 inch bore X 3.98 inch stroke. I have read about 352s that were bored and stroked out to 428, but a little sonic checking might be a good idea for that. :shock: These numbers are from memory, so Barry R would be the best source of info.

Cletus66 is right, I'm thinking of the old mid70's 361 pickup FE it was a 4.05x3.50 stroke. I used to race a 390 in super stock in the early 70's and the blocks can be real inconsistent on wall thickness. This was before sonic testing was done like it can be done today. Like Cletus66 said, if you want to go to 4.13 you might want to sonic check

Don't get too confused. The 352 is a Big Block FE like the 332-428,The 351 is a completely different Ford engine. It's considered a small block.

Mikifin--make easy on your self and go to the 460, just did the swap in a 63 peice of cake, harder getting that old piece of junk out than doing the new one.

Thank you all for your responses I just found this info on a different site.

Actualy the 428 has a bore of 4.132 in and a stroke of 3.980 in
the 352 is 4.002 in 3.500 in
I know you can only bore so much before you start to weaken things, but my thought process was to make this engine a 406 or 427 I found this stroker kit at Survival Motorsports

What I needed to know is that if the blocks are the same can I use this kit made for the 390 on my 352?

Only a sonic check of the bores will tell you if the block will take that bore. That said, the sonic check WILL NOT tell you if there are any pin hole thin spots...that could require a sleeve. Your bore is 4.00, a 390 is 4.050, a .030 over 390 piston would require a 4.080 bore so you'd be taking .080 out of the block.

Heck ... go really retro and throw a 292 in it, exhaust crossover tube and all. Make all the kids scratch their heads wondering what the heck it is. :D

Not everyone has unlimited funds to build the engine of there choice!!!
This is an all-original 55,000 mile 62 Galaxie convertible. The car has been well taken care of but this engine is already in the car. Yes if I had my choice it would be a stroked 460 but funds are low and I was trying to keep things simple with just an engine rebuild and not have to change everything else. If I have to rebuild it anyway, why not change the stroke and bore to make it a little funner to drive.
If the block is the same as the 390, 427 and 428 then what difference would it make if it was bored the same as those engines. I am obviously asking out of ignorance because I don't know what the difference between the engines are other than the bore and stroke.

aw, so much for what I was gonna suggest... bore the 352 cylinders out completely and sleeve it to 427 bore, drop in a 428 crank and have a 454" FE. The blocks are the same externally, dimensions wise, but the bores are smaller and the 352 block wasn't cast with thick enough cylinders to allow enough of an overbore to the 428 or 427 bore size. Supposedly the 391FE truck blocks can be taken out to the 428 bore though.

All FE blocks look the same on the outside, but they are very different reguarding how the inside of the casting is (water jackets) You can NOT bore a 352 block to a 428 OR 427 bore size. Nor can you (typically) bore a 390 block to 428 bore size, and neither 390 or 428 block will go to the 427 bore size (which is 4.250" btw).

I don't blame you for wanting to keep an FE in it (I would), but do yourself a favor, and find a 390 block, which shouldn't be too hard to find. They usually go .060" over just fine. Then it can possibly be stroked to 427 c.i., I don't know, but FYI... a stroker kit to make a 390 into a 427 has WAY different bore/stroke measurements than a true Ford 427 does.

There are alot of possiblitys here. You can leave it stock or you can build a 390 using your 352 block by boring the block to 4.050" [std 390] and getting a 390 crank/rods/pistons or perhaps a stroker using your block and one of the aftermarket crank kits available making up to 445" I suggest keeping the FE as the car will be worth alot more keeping it origional, at least in looks. You can keep the stock look of the 352/390 and still enjoy the extra cubic inches of a stroker by carefully selecting the parts to make it look origional. The 352 block will not be able to bore much larger than 4.080 [.030 over 390] and it should be sonic checked to go that far as early blocks usually have more cylinder wall than later blocks.

I would truly rather put the 460 engine in the car, I already have the engine (needs to be rebuilt Too) I even already have a C-6 to put behind it, But with funds being tight and summer on it's way, I want to drive my convertible now not when I finally get everything together.

One more consideration you need to think about is the convertable frame is not as "friendly" to use the C6 with the X member that hard top cars don't have. Perhaps you can find another car to use your 460.

390 and 360 blocks are the same bore. There are people giving away 360 blocks just because they're taking up room. I have one, unfortunately, someone left water in it over the winter (not me btw) and popped out the valley. This would be my choice. Get a 360 or 390 block and build your stroker. Keep the 352 just in case you decide to sell the car later and the buyer wants the original motor.
