How many different variations are there of marine bellhousings are there? The reason I ask is that the local superflow 901 dyno is set up with some sort of marine universal bellhousing that fits sbc, bbc, and I think small ford. The starter hangs off the top rear of the housing, if that helps any. I am just trying to figure out how to get a big ford on this dyno, as it is the owner doesn't really want to spend any money on getting a bbf on his dyno, but if I found all the parts we could make it happen. Any ideas?

It has been some time since I looked close at the bellhousing on the dyno, but if memory serves me correctly it looks something like the one in this auction. Does anyone make one like this for a 460 ford?

Yes, they exist. Worked on a boat, years ago, 460 that had one. Sorry I don't remember the manufacturer. NOTE!!! if you find one be sure to use a REVERSE rotation starter. (don't ask how I know, it's a long story)

I hope "the owner" is not some of your kinfolk, but that sorta' deal scares the crap out of me. When the dyno owner has that kind of attitude about spending some money in order to dyno your BB Ford engine, it sounds like a bad experience just waiting to happen. If he's in business to dyno engines, then he should have no problem investing money in his equipment!

Obviously he has never dynoed a BB Ford before and doesn't know what to expect. Most likely he'll have problems loading the pump and your engine will be his guinea pig. I suspect a lot of the data will be invalid and you'll have a bad experience at that shop.

Load up your engine and drive to Bret Powell's in Missouri, or come down here and dyno if you want to. You'll save money in the long run, rather than buying equipment for a lazy owner. Some of the older SuperFlow can't handle over 750 Hp., don't know about his, but......... take your engine to a shop that has experience dynoing big block Fords.

Ok guys, there is another shop in the area with a dts, I will check them out and see what they can do for me. I think the old superflow is only good for 750 as you said Charlie. I have two engines I am hoping to get done either this fall or next spring that I want to dyno. My heads seem to be looking good now I need to see if the over all packages are good and get some more numbers.

I don't think it would be all that big of a deal to come up with a bell housing to use on the dyno.... I use an FMX bell housing, a flexplate and a driveplate and that works fine.

This is the bellhousing you need. You do NOT need to use the top/reverse mount starter location.

But I agree with the others. Don't support this chevy guy, If the going gets rough, you'll end up on the short end of the stick. :?

There are several variations of bellhousing for Ford marine applications, some of which use different mounting points (to the boat's stringers or to the jet pump housing) and some that bolt to/accept a velvet drive transmission, etc.

Stick with a bellhousing that will accomodate a Ford starter at the 460's normal mounting location, because the reverse mount (and thereby reverse rotation) starter motors are very pricey...even just to rebuild one. It's so bad, in fact, that guys out here are remachining their revers-rotation top mount belhousings to accept AC Delco GM starters (since those GM starters are already normally mounted along the trans and not along the engine block and spin "reverse rotation" by virtue of their intended design).

This, of course, assumes you don't go elsewhere for your pulls, which it sounds as though maybe you should.
