460 oil pump drive shaft came out. How do I reinstall it?

Pulled my distributor and the pump shaft came right out with it. I have no idea how to get it back in. I wanted to get it from the oil pan, but there’s no clearance to remove the pan. Is it possible to put the drive shaft back in through the top?

HI,
yes Use a 5/16 socket I believe with an extension put a magnet on the extension to hold the shaft and just put it back in thru the top. you'll know when its in as it well be hard to turn by hand. then remove the magnet and be careful and make sure the socket lets go and your in..

good luck take care be safe

Thanks Tim, I’ll try it out.
This will work. If you haven't done it yet, mock up what you are going to use and make sure the shaft will not easily slip out of the socket or the socket will easily slip off and fall in the pan. I know this first hand!

Got it in by putting some assembly lube on the bottom of the the distributor, dropping it in, then wiggling the distributor free
