I have a 76/77 lincoln 460 in my 79 truck.
I'm having issues with getting it timed.
This started when I had to replace the pickup coil in the distributor.
Replaced the coil, truck started right up but would cough and puke thru the carb when given gas. (vacuum advance connected)
With the vacuum advance disconnected it runs pretty decent. Fires up/good throttle response and idles fine.
What could I be missing?Did I put the reluctor back on wrong I tried 2 different ways.
flipped it and nothing changed.
I've tried timing it at pretty much every degree setting possible, BTDC/ATDC and still pukes with vacuum connected.
I pulled vacuum thru the advance and it held so I don't believe that is bad.
The new pickup coil ohmed out to spec so I don't believe that is bad.
I am timing it with the vacuum disconnected from the distributor and hose plugged.
Hose is connected to the port on the carb.
This is a basic engine, no emissions left, maybe 3 vacuum hoses. I'd have to go count but you get the idea.
Engine ran well before the pickup coil went bad.
I can drive it now with no distributor advance connected but mileage sucks.

What is your initial timing set to?

What is your total timing? Initial plus mechanical? At what RPM is it all in?

DS distributors offer too much vacuum advance for use in a non EGR application.


Vacuum advance hooked to ported or manifold vacuum source?


How far is the new pick up coil from the reluctor teeth? Does it move farther away as the vacuum advances?

Wow all stuff I have to look at closer, above my pay grade right now but I'll check it out.
If I recall correctly my initial timing is set at 12 BTDC right now. Or very close to this.
This has been an issue since March and I putzed with it a few months ago and just kind of set it on the back burner.
I didn't realize the pickup coil could move, it appeared it only installed one way, where the holes lined up at and was stationary.
I think I understand what you're saying though.
If I pull vacuum on the advance I should see if it moves any with the cap off correct? I know I saw the advance moving, when I tested the vacuum on it but never thought to watch the coil.
Don't have a tach so I haven't a clue what the RPM is at when all in. Guess it's a good time to get one..
I'll have to look at it again to see what the total timing is I don't recall now especially since I just disconnected the advance.
It's going to be a minute before I get into it again though, I have a lot going on currently and was hoping for a post to get me looking in a better direction.

Iron headed smog engines typically like 34 to 36 degrees total timing. Initial plus mechanical.

Vacuum advance is at part throttle to increase response and economy and does not count toward total timing as noted above.

Watch the distance between the reluctor tooth and pick up to see if it changes as you apply vacuum to the dashpot. Check the coil resistance at rest and at full advance to see if it changes. Wire issue, defecting PU coil etc.
