138,000 is not bad, considering it is 6 years old, that is about 21k per year.
When it comes to the engine check to see if there is any oil around the bell housing. This could be a rear main. Or the o-rings on the high pressure pump are leaking. Also look underneath and look at the feed tubes to the turbo. The o-rings would wear and cause a leak.
I would also want to have the balljoints checked and brakes. Those were the big maintance items.
Also, the biggest problem was the trans. Check to see if the fluid looks burnt or smells burnt.
If it cost under 30K then it is a good price. In this part of the country, most people that bought these truck and took care of them on the outside then it was safe to say they took care of them mechanically.
The only other thing I can think of, was the crank sensor. But I wouldn't worry about that till it became a problem. Like a No Start.
I've got a 01 with 7.3 with 138,000 miles on it, the only problem I've had with it are the Glow Plugs relay went thru 3 so far. and I had a noisy front hub, and I put new rotors and brakes on it once, and my fuel filter canister developed a leak. other then that change oil every 3 to 4 thousand miles with a good Deno oil or 4 to 5 thousand with a Syn. oil.
Pull the air cleaner lid and look for dirt, look at the compressor wheel very close. Any signs of dirt I'd get worried. Oil leaks are no big deal, dusted engine = empty wallet.
Thats just getting broke in for one of these engines thats been cared for.
Tranny issues are not the end of the world either, hell they are doomed from the get go off of the assy line as far as I'm concerned. A few dollars in the right areas will do wonders in its reliability.
BTW the Crank position sensor has a current recall from ford for replacement so thats a no cost fix if never been done up to now.
My 7.3 has 127,000 miles on it and run great and I think nothing of driving half way across the country in it. others have listed most of what needs checked on them though.
I know you are asking about a 7.3 but I just wanted share this info.
I haven't had the first hic-up with my 07 6.0. matter a fact the fuel mileage keeps getting better!
It had been getting 16.9-17.4, now it's getting 18.1 week before last and 18.6 last week. (Bone stock f250 2wd.) I love to come across the extra money to put a 5" cat-back exhaust on. I'm sure that would give me a couple of points.
I've got over 275K on my 01 and it runs great. Just a little loud is all. It needs injectors PLUS I need to get off my lazy *** and do the in-tank fuel pickup mods. That should shut it up some...
If the one you're looking at checks out fine I'd say go for it. I bought mine almost 2 years ago with 228K on it. other than few sensors here and there that have been bad it's been OK. If you're not afraid to work on it then you'll be OK. If not be prepared to spend the bucks for someone else to...
I haven't been coming on here much anymore as my BBF projects are all "done", but holy cow, is there any moderators left? I'm trying to help out by reporting spammers as I come back, but wow, there's a TON of them, and it seems like some that I report go unnoticed for days or weeks.
