I am in the process of doing a 460 swap in my 89 hatchback, after some research I have decided to run a stock type rear suspension set up. My question is how much power can the 8.8 rear end housing stand up to, and what will need to be done to hold 800hp at the wheels

thanks kris

I know a couple guys with 7 and 8 second 1/4 mile turbo strokers running 8.8's in thier Mustangs. There are some things that need to be done though, i.e. welding up the tubes, changing the differential, etc... Both of those guys are using Detroit Lockers with 31 spine Moser axles.

You will need to do alot of welding and reinforcing of the rear suspension points and have a cage / tubes tying everything together. as Far as the 8.8 a truck housing is a better choice (it isnt a crack prone as the mustang housings) but the 8.8 can be made to live with the right modifications. such as 9" type ends and bearings, girdle, correct diff or spool, bigger axles, braces, welding of the tubes, ect.
