Got a 79 f150, mild 460 swap......Should i beef up my 9 inch rear or ditch it for a 60? I have heard their are 40 spline shafts available for the 9.....anybody run a rear 9 and have a secret to keeping it together?

unless your getting close to the 700hp mark a good stock 9inch will hold up all day long. It should be pulled apart and make sure it is in good condition. The 31 spline axles in good condition will hold up to 750hp the weekest link is the center section. With that being said the stock 9 will hold up just fine with a mild 460 in front of it.

All depends on vehicle weight and how hard it "hooks"

a 60 is hardly an upgrade from a stock 9 inch.
Dont waste your time swapping out a 9 for a 60. upgrade the 9 or go real big.
