Coast High Performance makes them. I bought one for my 351 and it looked like a quality piece.

205.158.104.42 Are Girdles REALLY necessary...?
No score for this post August 31 2001, 1:24 PM

...I keep reading about this things and I'm not convinced that they're really needed. Now, if a guy is planning on using a bunch of N20 or turbo or Supercharger - I can see it. But for a strip-use N/A mill running a 1050 Dominator @ 7K rpms, do ya think it's necessary "insurance" or just overkill?

Do the girdles typically need to have any machine work done to the top of the main caps or oil pump pickup to install one or do they usually bolt right on without any needed modifications?

Thanks for your recommendations & advice,,,,

It depends on power output. My old 521 with good iron heads showed sighs of cap walk on the rear main. Last 514 we did had major cap walk (installed girdle from Blue Thunder). The 514 made a little more power than the 521. Mostly stock 460 may not need girdle. The price was not bad & it fit real good. Feel free to contact me.

MarkJ,
So have you opened up the 514 since you installed the BT girdle to see if the cap-walking has stopped or not?

Did you have to do any machine work to the caps to install the BT girdle?

Did you fog or turbo either motor or were they N/A'd?

Thanks for your advise, StickBBF

StickBBF,
The 514 is still running so have not been into it yet. It is an engine I did for another person & will not get to check it out 'till it needs freshening. Girdle went on with no machine work & engine is normally aspirated backed by a Lenco. The block before this one looked like the caps had been drug on a grinder & the block was split from the #2 main to the cam. The caps in all stock blocks I have dealt with walked if any power was being made. The SVO block I used before going to the RDI blocked walked some on front & rear until I used hollow pins instead of the split ones that came with it. I also run a Lenco. I have not put enough runs on the RDI block to open it up.

MarkJ,
Sounds to me that you felt a main cap girdle may be some insurance to prevent a split block "repeat performance"! I think I may bite the bullet and follow your lead on this.............

Thanks again,
StickBBF

....did you use on the 514 main caps?
Would you use it again or would you go with a different supplier, style or brand the next time around?

Thanks, StickBBF

StickBBF,
It is a Blue Thunder piece. It went on top of stock caps & came with hardware (Actually the bottom). Real curious on any good it will do but won't know till it is returned to me to freshen. They must work or there would not be a need for them to be produced.

... and it went on just fine. I had to grind on the Melling CJ oil pump housing in a few spots, but I don't feel it will compromise it's structure in any way. I am also impressed by the girdles' workmanship and hope it will add to strengthening the bottom end of my 501".
