Ok, I'm still trying to get the thing started (new build). I have checked the firing order, it is on the dizzy CCW. I'm setting it on the compression stroke 10 BTDC. I'm getting a back fire through the carb. I have checked twice to make sure I'm not 180 out. I pulled the valve cover and when I'm on #1, both valves are closed (compression stroke). I'm getting kinda frustrated.

Any ideas?

mine does the same **** if it gets loaded up with fuel!

If the engine wants more ign timing it can pop back to the carb . Try a few more degrees of timing .

I remember when we got my first 460 put together, that baby was shooting flames out the carb about 3 feet up. Father got some new eye lashes.

It was winter and cold then, likely the engine is for you to. You just have to keep playing with the timing and try not to get singed.

Sounds like my donk when i tried first start it.
again i think you need more adv on your dizzy, make sure your battery is well charged so you dont load it up on any more petrol. dosnt sound to seriouse yet so i wouldnt stress!

I had a 302 do the same thing, regardless of where I set the timing.

Timing gear / chain issues were the reason.

Vac leak/lean condition can cause a carb bf too.
