I plan to start working on my 71 F100 soon, and am wondering what my best option for rear tires is. The truck is getting Mustang II front suspension and a four link out back, so I can run whatever I want. I have been told that bigger is better, but wonder what you guys think. It will see some street time, so something like a ET Street or Quick time DOT is ideal. I see most companies only make about 18.50" wide yet Hoosier goes upto 22.50". I have been thinking 33" tall, but what do you experienced guy reccommend?

Hard to say. If you're interested in maximizing your track performance, a lot more info is necessary........Engine combo, trans, gearing, vehicle weight, track length (1/8 or 1/4 mi.). Then the street duty enters the picture.....Do you give a care about gas mileage? What else can you tell us about this thing?

557 A headed deal, C6 trans, 9" rear, will decide on gear after tire selection. Mostly 1/4 mile drag, and I really don't care about gas milage or anything like that. Truck will prob weigh around 3500lbs. It's just a toy, no serious competition. Since I can run any size tire or wheel because there is plenty of room, I am just wondering what the best or most common overall tire size may be. One of the local chassis builders I spoke with told me to run as big as possible, recommended a 33x18.50 MT ET street. Just curious as to what others experiences have been.

as far as what width look in a jegs or some kinda cataloge et streets are listed for width but numbers are for side wall width and et drags are listed by tread width. id put 33 tall on it no matter the width the tall tires will aid in hooking up

i looked up the hooisers and et streets the ones you had listed and as far as tread width et streets are only 1.2 inches narrower if you run hoosiers run the quick time r the regular quick times are mostly a street tire but the r series looks like an et street

The bigger the tire under that truck the better as far as looks go. BUT..as far as performance goes,the smaller the masses to carry down the track the better the et. The taller the tire,the more gear you will need for strip or street. I Love those ole trucks! Rick

I agree with maverick. You can go to big. Those big heavy tires act like giant energy absorbing flywheels at the dragstrip.

Losing weight on a drag car is good. Losing rotating weight is very very good.

That being said if it is indeed just a toy the look is probably the most important thing of all. We are not talking huge performance gains or losses here.

Ideally you want just enough tire to manage the wheelspin in the first half of the track. anything after that is just for show.

on my race car I went as big as possible 17x33 for a couple reasons, knowing I would someday be putting way more POWER in my car, and the other one is sometimes you go to some tracks and it is worse than trying to race on a dirt road. I know they slow me down just a little but I can handle that just don't like the constant spinning I get from some tracks. I can also put smaller on there if I need or see fit.

Look at my Mickey Thompson post if you are using a 5x 5.5 bolt circle. I found a killer deal on 5x10 and 5x12 size rims in that circle! ($179 & $143 each w/ shipping)
