Been toying with the idea of installing a manual transmission in my '74 Cougar.
Is there a semi-modern budget friendly 5-speed that would hold up behind a 528 producing 600-650 lb-ft of torque in a heavy car?
I've heard of guys running a TR3550 behind some pretty built small blocks in lighter cars with some success.
This is a street car with street tires. I wouldn't even mind going with a Toploader as one could probably go with all factory Ford parts for the conversion.
Any of you guys done something like this?

Any and all input appreciated.

I ran a TKO600 behind a 530 ft/lb 466 in a 4200lb Galaxie on the street for several years. The 547 on the engine stand that should make 700/700 is getting a Magnum T56. When I called Liberty about upgrading the TKO for the added power and torque of the 547 they politely told me that I'd be an idiot to dump a bunch of $$ into the TKO vs swapping to a Magnum. I took their advice.
