Hi guys,
I have a 70 Torino that I'm building a 429 Cobra Jet motor for. The car weighs around 4000#. The motor will use the factory CJ heads, 72 CC with 2.24/1.73 I,E valves and 1.73 stock rockers. 735cfm Qjet carb on factory CJ intake and run on pump gas. Factory exhaust. Bore is 4.39 (.030 over) and stroke is 3.59. 9.5-10/1 compression. C6 automatic with 2500 stall converter. 3.50 rear gears with 26.5 in tire.
I want a cam that is hotter than factory and will work well with what I have for a good street beast. Has to lope good too.I have narrowed it down to these 4 cams but if you have a better suggestion by all means share.
Comp Cams XR280HR: duration @ .050 I-230 E-236, lift I-.521 E-.532, LSA 110, rpm 2200-5800 (roller cam- not sure I want to go this route) I like these numbers tho
Crane Cams H-288-2: duration @ .050 I-226 E-230, lift I-.522 E-.530, LSA 112, rpm 2400-6000 (hydraulic flat tappet)
Comp Cams 280H: duration @ .050 I-230 E-230, lift I-.530 E-.530, LSA 110, rpm 2000-6000 (hydraulic flat tappet)
Comp Cams 287TH7: duration @ .050 I-234 E-249, lift I-.519 E-.503, LSA 107, rpm 2200-6100 (hydraulic flat tappet)
Thanks!
Jim

After running off the shelf cams for years and then for the last 5 engines having every cam custom made for my application, I'd say the best recommendation would be to get a hold of one of the guys on here that either make them or have them made. Scotty (The Mad Porter) made my last 2. Super happy with the results, well worth the extra $35-50 or so to have a custom piece made. Plus, you get to brag you've got a custom cam to boot.

The dished builder pistons you reference are designed for smaller intake valves used in the passenger car heads.
The valve notch is not large enough radially.

It is much easier to moderate compression and pick up some power, torque and throttle response by building a 460.

This is how we update the OEM 429 CJ's and SCJ's.

Feel free to use as a guide.

That is an awesome build. I have 2 460 cranks so all I need is the pistons. Since the block is already done I'll need .030 pistons instead of .060, but no issue. I love the cam specs. Should work perfect with a 2500 stall converter and 3.50 gear. Is there a way I could order a cam and lifters? Would also need to know the spring pressures to get the correct springs. Looks like the cam was degree'd in at +4? Do you have the part number for the SA chain?

Thanks for all your help! I really appreciate it!
