This problem has been consistent since the engine refresh?

How did the spark plugs look when you had them out for the comp check?

Is it possible the rockers are improperly adjusted without affecting the comp check?

I don’t think cutting (someone correct me here if I’m wrong) .020 off the block decks is gonna cause you to hang a valve open with a stock length pushrod but if you’re timing adjustment don’t fix the issue you may want to look at pushrod length.

Glad you got it sorted out and didn’t throw any of those old distributors away, sometimes being a “collector” of spare parts pays off.
