Pretty much every day I get an e-mail that somebody figures I will find hilarious, but I don't get a chance to find out, because I can't open them. A box pops up that says "This file does not have a program associated wih it for preforming this action. Create an association in the Set Associatons control panel."
I've searched the control panel and can't find anything - where would I find this place so I can create an association?
It only does this on certain e-mails.

First, what mail reader are yo using? Second what Operating system are you using. If you are using exchange, OWA or mail (Microsoft) or Thunderbird (Mozilla) it makes things pretty easy, you can down load free versions of add-on which allow you to view .jpeg, Mpg, avi (realplayer, windows media, etc cover most of the mainstream stuff).

If you are using something like Forté, eudora or other dedicated mail readers - then you need to down load and read the help files, all seem to their own way of adding in these little helpers.

Pretty sure some of guys can give you advice on the details of the odd ball stuff - I'm pretty much into Microsoft.

I have Windows Vista and I'm using the Windows mail program that came with the computer. The one I couldn't open today was just a message, but I'm sure some of the other ones have been video's.

vista is a whole different animal than my XP. Sorry, not much help from me:(. In XP you can right click a file and select "open with" and choose what program you want.

If you haven't added anything, other than M$ stuff -

1. Press the "Start" button
2. find the "Default Programs" button
3. select from 4 basic settings:
Set your defauts, Associates a file type or protocol, Change autoPlay and set program access and computer default.

You will need to make a change in either Autoplay or Set Associations.

This will get you in the ball park of where things are changed. Now you need to know what kind of files are not responding or not opening.

if they are pictures, movies, videos etc. it'll be different than if they are documents. Most people know enough to send only text messages through basic mail readers, The fancy stuff, is sent through HTML. That where things can get complicatedted. By default, for security, prevent mail viruses - newer programs do not allow you to open some types of messages in mail. Unless you have anti-virus installed.

There are free anti-virus, free picture and movie readers, free spyware available on the net, most of it is as good (sometimes better) than the stuff you have to pay for.
