I got the old gears off and fitted the new ones on. The engine is at TDC and both crank and cam gear dots line up at noon and 6. However, my distributor is not facing #1. The black line on my distributor is #1. Why would that be off?

Scratch that. As usual I was over thinking it. All I had to do was loosen the dizzy and turn it to match #1.

Another question though. The factory cam gear protruded out to allow the outer piece of the 2 piece fuel eccentric to spin freely when torqued down. The new Cloyes set is flat, so when the cam bolt is torqued down it seizes the outer piece of the eccentric against the gear. Should/could I put a thin washer between the eccentric and gear to allow it to spin freely again?

over thinking,,,, the new set is most likely a double roller and is thicker than the factory plastic gear just bolt it up .. the eccentric should not spin freely

It is a double roller. The factory 2 piece eccentric outer part is designed to spin freely. The 1 pieces are stationary.

You would do better to find a one piece eccentric.
The amount the dizzy rotor was advanced after the install is the amount the cam was retarded relative to straight up.

77 Lincoln, did my worn out timing chain jump a tooth? I’m at TDC, and the only thing that seems to line up is the keyway at 12 o’clock. I’m aware this has the factory retarded cam timing for emissions but it still seems off. The cam gear marking is pointed towards the drivers side and not at 6 o’clock. Either way I’m replacing it to get rid of the plastic tooth gear and the chain is extremely loose.

It’s not jumped, and you are correct that is the retarded lower sprocket.

No, you have not jumped timing. And you were correct that is the retarded lower sprocket. Back in the mid/late 70s I was working in a Ford dealer where we got complaints of high dollar Torino Elite’s(or any 460 vehicle) that were doggy, got horrible gas mileage. We would put a 429 lower sprocket on and the tuneup guy would trick out the distributor, making a huge difference. You will probably need more than just a lower sprocket…

Update: Desmogged the car, installed a spread bore to square bore adapter and put an Edelbrock 1906 carb on. It fired right up without skipping a beat. The weather has been crappy so I haven’t had a chance to drive/tune it but so far seems to be a different engine!

HI, the only thing I see or don't see is where the PCV is going to be drawing fresh air.. make sure the oil filler cap is of the breather type so the PCV can work properly.. looks good..

Thanks. The breather is there, just hidden behind that ugly coil..

Now that plugs into the air filter housing with a little filter on it in the housing.. if it don't, I don't think that is a filter cap.. it needs to draw filtered air into the system or it well bring dirty air into the valve cover.. just an FYI..

It is not. That angled plastic fitting clips to a small filter located in the air cleaner housing.
