429 and 460 are basically the same thing as far as the 'early' 68-78 engines go.
429 was made from 68 to 73, after that everything was a 460 only (except in large commercial trucks with had a "funky" 429 and 370 engines).
The difference in cubic inches comes from the crank stroke. A 429 has a 3.590" inch stroke, and a 460 has a 3.850" inch stroke...just a hair over a 1/4" inch extra stroke.
So the crankshafts are different between the two, and so are the pistons (same bore size, but wrist pin location is different between the two), the rods are the same.
In 1978, Ford changed the 460 to external balance (foolishly!!), and then in 1988(?) it became fuel injected and they revised the cylinder heads and intake manifold.
A carburated manifold will not bolt on to the late model EFI heads unless you do some machining "surgery" to the bolt pattern.
