Hey guys I’m attempting to convert to a carbed setup on my 91 I have some dove c heads that I’ve got ported polished and resurfaced but the pushrods seem to be very loose and wrong length with this setup and have way to much wiggle and leeway. I’m trying to either figure out a way to make this pushrod setup work without having to spend 300$ on new custom length pushrods but it seems like that’s my only choice any advice on how to make my setup work a different way?

You are using the proper early rail rocker arms?

The 1991 heads and rocker arms use an 8.55” long pushrod. The D0VE heads and rocker arms use an 8.68” long pushrod. We have the original 8.68” pushrods if you need them; call to purchase or you can buy brand new most anywhere.

Check all of the rocker arm contact pads. They should have a slight radius and NOT be chewed up.
Also check the valve stem tips. Especially the exhaust.
These rockers are notorious for chewing up valve stem tips.

If all is ok and you have the bottle neck studs and lock down nuts check #1 at TDC compression with the longer push rods.
As you snug down the nut and take the slack from between the rocker and push rod cup in the lifter plunger there should be about 1/4 to 1 turn to seat the nut on the rocker studs shoulder. This is before torque to about 30#.

If it takes more than a turn your push rods are a bit long.
If you don't have at least 1/4 turn preload they are still too short. The later block is about .023" taller than the early blocks.

Finally. Mr. Gasket makes a shouldered poly lock kit to convert these to adjustable. 920G is the part number.
I used to use them years ago and they work well.

The rocker tip radiused pad should contact the valve stem tip from center to center inboard.

Hope this helps.

If you upgrade the cam to something more aggressive consider getting roller rockers, studs and guide plates. The iron rail rockers are not suitable.
