I know this might seem dumbfounded, but what does "FE" stand for. Such as 460 FE. Just a quick question because i don't know.

.... could be a coincidence but, FE is the symbol for iron on the periodic table.

yoeman you are correct, i always understood that FE was ford-edsel as well, even though the FE engines came in mercurys.

Very true so far as the Mercury use, but....Ford generally designates things by the brand or model line that is the primary...or, sometimes, first (chronologically)...user. For example, the D3VE casting designation for a cylinder head uses V, indicating Lincoln, although those heads were used in several other applications. :wink:

The SBF engine family was, at first, known as the "Fairlane" series, and later as the "Challenger" (at least the 289 was), although they were used in other vehicles from their introduction.

So far as I know:

FE= Ford-Edsel

FT= Ford Truck

MEL= Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln

335 & 385= engineering design document numbers internally designating those families at FoMoCo

Windsor or "W"= 1) a FoMoCo engine plant; 2) also used by FoMoCo to differentiate the 351 engine made at that plant, a derivative of the "Fairlane"/"Challenger" line, from the 335 series 351 CI engine built at the Cleveland engine plant

Cleveland or "C"= um, see above

"M"= "Modified" per at least one official FoMoCo document; used commonly to differentiate the 335 series 351 CI engine built & installed as a production stopgap when 351W stocks ran short; or, you can go with Monsterbaby's definition "Mmmmm, who cares?" :mrgreen:

400M= no such damn thing...it's a 400 engine from the 335 series...Ford only made one 400.

302 Windsor= no such thing there, either...they were made at several plants, anyway

Super Duty= originally a very large gas engine line used from '58 into at least the '70s; (requiring one's own personal oil well to supply enough gas to operate it on a daily basis); now used to designate certain light & medium truck models.

Gots to love that Christmastime trivia. :D

In Australia, we had 302 Windsors from 1968-1971 and then 302 Clevelands from 1972-1983. So here we do have 302W's and 302C's.
Yep....I was planning on tossing in a blurb about the Aussie 302C, which maybe should be the 302A, source of those famous Aussie 2V heads, and completely forgot...I don't function well at 2:00 am. Or possibly ever. :mrgreen:

So far as the Aussie 302W, out of curiosity, did Ford actually reference it as that, or is that a common slang term? In the States it's fairly common to say it, but Ford never called it that officially so far as I know. It was (sort of) referred to as a Windsor, at least being of the Windsor family, in some later Ford publications.

Ford never used that terminology for the 302 here. It is pretty much a common usage thing, you see it in parts advertising and parts lists.

You would be real suppressed on the stuff that they have come out with the last few years. I don't think it will die now LOL. Back in 2000, I thought it was heading down that long road to death! But it took a 180 degree turn for the better.......JMO

Actually FE can be an abbreviation for many things. Ford related, Ford Engine. Some say Ford, Edsel (Edsel Ford). The most common (IMO), Iron. Call them what you want, that engine design paved the way for Ford's world known performance, via three slick GT40's!

My understanding is that there WAS a 460 FE, although never factory.
It was a drag racer's combination consisting of a .060 over 427 block, coupled with a 428 crankshaft.
Supposedly ran great with the 427 heads.
On a side note, I am not old enough to verify this. :?

I remember reading in a Ford service manual from around 1959/1960 that the FE stood for "Ford Engine" to tell it apart from the "MEL" which was "Mercury/Edsel/Lincoln".....and I think they also had a Lincoln only style of engine at that time too.

Remember that in the flathead days, there was a difference between a Mercury flathead and a Ford flathead, and in the late 40's Lincolns had a special engine for their high end cars...it was a 12 cylinder Lincoln only unit.

When the FE was introduced, there was some overlapping production of different styles of engines....some were coming, and some were going, but they were, for a short period of time, all being produced at the same time.
