Flattops vs. Domes

I've heard so many conflicting stories I just wanted some of the GURU'S to voice what you know from actual dyno experience. Some say that domes interfere with flame travel making them a bad choice that flattops are the only way to go, some say thats bullsh#%. Give us you're opinion! Thanks:confused:

I heard the same thing years ago. When I built my 572 I stayed flat top and milled my heads to get the compression up. Lem tells me now that the A heads dont mind a small dome so my new pistons have a small one. Probably has something to do with the combustion chamber as well.

dkp
The domes I spoke of are only .215" tall and a good smooth shape . Tall and ugly is a different matter ;-} .

that's the same thing you said about them chicks at the bar.:p
Short ugly is ugly too.... lol
Sometimes big domes on an Ugly girl can be fixed with beer goggles. Alky won't help with the other deal. :)

Big domes, and flat head is a good combo......got somewhere to set peanuts and beverage.
Add quarter slot and a pistol grip ear shifter (folds back 'intake strainers'), combine with beer goggles and throw a flag over the flat top and all is good!!!!
domes , say it got more to with the plug placement .. big ugly domes -- yep them big block chevys can't get out of the 16.5 second bracket and make more than 175 hp and thats with 600 plus cubes

Yep, plug placement....that's what the shifter's for.........LOLOLOL
Back when I had hair, domes were called "deflectors".
And, was a dish a reverse deflector?
Bullshyt deflectors
one must purchase them before entering a room (or forum) full of chevy guys:D

Only if you stepped the piston. Gale Banks used to do this on his turbo stuff.

So the quench side would be deck high and the combustion chamber side would be stepped down.

Kinda stupid really......
That's the deal....I saw that in Banks turbo 454 bbc jetboat engine.
Flashback!!!!

ROFLMAO!

From an engine I was given for helping a guy out. 480" cubic inch limit ( 4.375 x 3.98 ) w/ a Bryant billet crank w 2.100" rod journals BME alumi rods . A-460 heads w/ 70 cc chambers 15:1+ on alcohol.

My new babies for the 565"

13:1 with a 66cc chamber A-460's.

If the question is" "Will a motor make more power with perfect flame propagation than it with with the correct compression?"....put the dome on it and go racing.

Gotcha, I personnaly don't like them for more reasons than one, flame travel being one, weight being another! but was listening to some guy's arguing about them at an engine builders the other day and just wanted ya'lls opinion of them! As for where the post went, enough WILD TURKEY will cover up a whole lotta UGLY! and after about 15 minutes I don't wanna see her again anyway!
