I have come across a 1981 1 ton dully work van with a 460 motor in a little hidden junkyard. Could this have a steel crankshaft and be d9te block? Any opinions or knowledge would be appreciated. Are the rods the same as the cj rods for strength? If it is a steel crank can they be turned and machined to be used as an internal balanced unit?

yes it would be a d9te block... no it wouldnt be a steel crank... the only steel crank 385 series engines were the boss 429 and the ford truck 429 available in medium duty trucks 79-91. medium duty being f600-f850

No 460's ever came with a steel crank from the factory. They are all cast and they are plenty strong for most uses of the engine.

i believe the stock cranks are nodular iron and very strong
