I have been trying to fiqure this combo. let me tell you what I think so far.

I plan on running in the super street or street class at my local 1/8 mile dragstrip. my ride is a 1979 f150 supercab with a 460/c6 with 3.50 rear gear.

I will be installing a full spool and I have 12" of wheel well clearance. I'm thinking of running a 29-30"od x 10-10.5 wide tire. Probably going to go with the MT drag radial so I could still run street class if I want.

With that od tire what size ring gear should I install?

Right now the engine is stock and I want to start playing around and I can always change the gear ratio later down the road as I get new found power.

I will be driving the truck to the track and changing tires when I get there.

Yes, to the track and here and there.

For the time being I was planning on using the stock tire and wheel combo. I think it is a 235/75 15. I can't remember off the top of my head. I will look with in the next hour.

Unless the class rules prohibit it, or you don't have the room, I'd use a 29x10.5W. I agree w/ Gearhead...a 4.11 or 4.56 gear would go good. In fact, a 29in tire, at 5500rpm w/ a 4.86 gear runs to 97mph.

I messured clearance and I have a total of 12" without rolling the fender. So I fiqure as long as I get my wheel back spacing correct I can run a 10".

toss the leaf springs inside the frame rail and you'll have mad room in the fender.. We thosed like a 18.50 wide sportmans tire's under that bitch..well my old f100 we did way back in high school..welded some flat 1/4 steal plate on the inside the framerails put the leaf spring inside .and moved the mounts...custom off set wheel unless you find a shorter rear end. or weld in a ladderbar cross member, ladder bars, and coilovers and do the same thing..and mod the inner wheel wells to...
And if the sportmans fit then about any slick should fit. Just some ideas for yeah.
make's me miss my old 77 F150

I'm trying to see if I can find some 90/10 shocks for the front and some 50/50 for the rear. I'm pretty sure I can I just have to take some mesurements.

Ok, I am back on this question again!

Here is what I do know about the truck now.

Weight 4,540lbs with me. 2,800lbs front & 1740lbs rear

Stall is around 2,600rpm

Estimated hp 300-325

Do you still think the 29" with a 4.11 will be my best choice?

If you look at a 4800 rpm hp peak and a 5500 rpm shift point with that combo a 4.88 gear would put you at around 5500 at the finish line 1/4 mile according to my little prediction thing.

You only lose about 3 tenths going down to a 3.7. For street driveablillity the 3.7 or maybe even a 3.5 would be a lot nicer going down the road.

With the 4.88 you would be ~3500 with the 29" tire at 60

3.7's would be down to ~2700

I have 4.11 gears in my 68 mustang with 245/45 17's (25.5" tall) and I cruise at about 4000 rpm for 60 mph. Its liveable but I wouldnt want to go much over 50 miles or so at a stretch.

I have a spare set of 2.7's mounted up ready to go if I ever want to go anywhere far away. Only takes about an hour to change them out.

I plan on spraying a mild shot 100-150 down the road and have been told I might want the extra gear (3.50) for the nitrous.

So I think right now I might try just the 29" drag radials.
