Thinking about running synthetic oil in my new engine, I'm thinking it's got about 5000 miles on it now. Maybe I should start with semi synthetic and then use the real stuff at my next change. This is a mild build that is street driven mostly in summer months and stored in the winter, I'm thinking maybe 10W-30
Any thoughts,

Your proposal to first use the semi before the full synthetic would likely be O.K. Some have reported increased leaking with synthetic, so it would give a transition period for you to watch for this.

As far as viscosity goes, in the 70s, here's what Ford recommended for multi viscosity oils:

below +32F 5W-30 (but not for sustained driving at highway speeds)
-10F to +90F 10W-30
-10F to +90F (& above) 10W-40
above +10F 20W-40

I'd follow the recommendations. My climate is likely hotter than yours; I've been using either 15W-50 or 20W-50 year around, but it almost never freezes here any more.

One thing you should be vigilant on is the anti-wear additives present in the oil if your engine has flat tappets. Either choose an oil that's designed for the flat tappet engines (enough zinc compound) or add it to the oil. It's a lot better than getting round lobes on your cam.
