A buddy of mine is convinced that they can't make over 550 hp. Does anyone have proof otherwise? I need dyno numbers he is not easily convinced.
Greg

My carburetor guy says that some of his customers are making over 585 horsepower out of a 9:1 compression 355 running a 390cfm Holley, what does that tell you? I can build a 355 cubic inch engine that makes 400 horsepower from a 4412 500 two barrel. A 500 two barrel is 40% smaller than a 500 4 barrel would be(they are rated differently) and they are actually 1/2 of a 750 carburetor.
I see no reason what so ever why an 850 wouldn't easily be able to make over 600 horsepower quite easily, why not?

I believe when Edlebrock was developing the Victor intake they tested it with an 850 and it put out right around 700 hp. But I'm not sure if the carb was modified or anything.

Don't know how much hp but mine went 10.63 at 127 + mph. 3000# and poor combination. only 9.6.1 compression with 266/[email protected] cam duration. Only 125# cranking compression!

I saw a dyno sheet of a 429 that made over 600 HP at the rear wheels (manual transmission) using a 850 cfm Holley.

It is just theory here. I ran some numbers through my dyno software and it shows 850 being good for a touch over 1000hp with the right combo. RPM to CID ratio appears to be the big factor here, that is to say an efficient engine needs less carb per hp. That makes sense.
In anycase I have seen a supposed appr. 600hp engine with an 850.
