This engine will be going into a street/sled pulling truck for local competitions. It will probably get Av-gas on the street and Race gas at the pulls.

72' block 0.030" over, milled to zero deck
TRW liteweight flattop pistons
Pro-Line H-beam rods (stock length) $399 from www.flatlanderracing.com
11.7 cr.

Massively ported C8VE heads (same as D0VE)
850 Speed Demon carb
Weiand Stealth intake
Solid Comp cam, 248/260 @ 0.050" 108 lobe sep.
1 3/4" fenderwall headers and 3" exhaust

Sound like it will make some torque?

Thanks!

Sounds like an extremely well matched combo. These engines like alot of spread between intake and exhaust on the cam, so that cam should do nicely. I can't see any weaknesses really. It could probably handle a slightly bigger carb, but that 850 will do pretty nicely.

About the only thing I'd say to watch is the headers. The header flanges can be a real problem on these engines, especially on small truck headers. Try to get the biggest headers available for it and try to make sure the ports match up as well as possible. It may be tough with a highly ported head.

I agree, larger headers would be nice.

The engine is going into a 4WD truck, and the only headers available are 1 3/4".

The choice is between Hookers or L&L fenderwell units. The engine is a buddies, and he's already purchased the L&L headers. They are monsters with full 1/2" flanges and super thick tubes. Together the headers weigh in at 47 pounds! The design is okay, but I'd like to see thinner (larger ID) tubes of around 1 7/8" diameter.

Casler actually made 1 7/8" 460 headers to fit pickups. Unfortunately I've heard that they are in the proccess of going bankrupt. However, I managed to snag a set to fit the 77-79 F150/250 2wdr, from old stock that was sitting in a Vancouver parts suppliers stock. It was their last set. Phone around to places that stocked and sold Casler headers and you might just find some like I did.

hedman makes a header in the "Hustler" line for 66-82 4wd trucks,429-460, with 2" primary, 31/2" collector. It doesnt specify which trans, but will probably work with both.

They offer two sets, both are fenderwell units (which is good), one is 1 3/4", the other 2".

The 2" says they will fit Cobra Jet heads only, the 1 3/4" units are for standard heads only.

Can the 2" headers be made to work with the C8VE (D0VE) head?

Thanks!

24.196.182.137 Will the 2" headers be too big for a 248/260 cam in a pulling truck?
No score for this post December 9 2001, 7:35 AM

The truck will probably run the most from around 3k to 6k rpm. Are 2" headers too much, or just right? If they are just right, I'm sure we'll find a way to make them work.

From what i have seen in the past, 429-460 engines of 450-550 hp respond favorably to header sizes in the 2" range. The 1 3/4 headers will not be enough, and if 1 7/8 are not availabe, go with the 2".
