hi, i just put a new (to me) carb and intake on my lincoln and it was running like crap... started backfiring through the carb... and then caught fire... i had to run to my other car, grab my grease rag shirt, dump windshield washer fluid over it, and throw it over the carb to get it to stop burning. that was after getting everything worked out to where it should have worked, so now i need a new carb... i think this time instead of trying to go cheap used im going to just buy a new 600 cfm edelbrock and be done with it. oh well, lesson learned- dont trust used mechanical parts.

That sucks :( ...but heres a hint...the next time you have a carb backfire and there is fire coming from the carb, just crank the engine over and it will suck the flame down the carb and put it out!!

Be sure NOT to pump the throttle though, or else you'll just be feeding more gas into the fire!!

Sorry to hear about your problems, and I would like to offer a bit of advice that I follow myself. Whenever I am working on my car, I have a fire extinguisher on hand. When we work with the local high school kids, it is rule #1... have one on hand, it is first item to be unloaded. I do this mostly because I do live in a remote area, and fire dept response, as hard as they try, is far behind what is necessary to save anything. It might make a mess to clean up, but it beats the alternative, and gives you a chance to escape if things go bad. It should be one of the first tools you have on hand, and rates right up there with jack stands and safety glasses.

can I make yet another suggestion NEVER use windshield washer fluid to put out a fire, Most are made with methanol not exactly what I call good fire retardent... you got lucky personally (it's also 50% water but the alky CAN burn)
