Just started new motor...have some questions

Ok guys. A couple of days ago I posted that I couldn't get the new motor started. I checked the timing...dead on. Checked the firing order...correct. I was about to start tracing the wiring for the duraspark when I noticed the positive wire to the coil was loose. I tightened it and ran to get the keys. Hit the key and it cranked right up. Lots of smoke started pouring out of the engine bay so I killed it after about 15 seconds. From the looks of it, it was just the paint burning off the headers. Is this normal?

Also, it really wouldn't rev past 1500 rpms. Could this be timing related? This weekend one of my buddies is going to help. I'm going to have him hit the key while I adjust the timing.

I think you are supposed to break in the cam at 2000rpms for 15 minutes. Will 1500 rpms work if need be?

thanks
Austin

Cam break in

I have always kept it 2000 rpm or slightly higher.
break in

Motor should rev way past 1500, you have something wrong. If 1500 is all you can get then keep it there at least until you get the cam broken in unless you have other problems like heating or oil pressure. Just about every new motor will have some smoke from under the hood from greasy hands grabbing parts that get hot upon start-up. Chris
Did you check your throttle cable? Also, if that isn't the problem, I wouldn't do it at 1,500 if it were my motor. I've always been told to do it at no less than 2,000 and do it for at least 20 minutes. Some people say do it for half an hour for best results. Now is not the time to get skimpy or careless.
Yeah, I think it might be the throttle linkage. When I put it to the floor I don't think I'm getting even 1/4 throttle. I will take a look after work tomorrow.

I can't wait to get this thing on the road.

New 460 w/ ported D3s, 9.5 compression, recurved duraspark, headers, performer intake, holley 750, wide ratio C6 w/ mild stall. All in a 71 F100 short bed. It is going to be one fun truck!

LOL, this also happened to me, i was in the car and my two buddies were outside adjusting the timing and looking for leaks, etc. As soon as i saw all that smoke i almost shat myslef, and they laughed and said it was just the header paint.
If it's the throttle linkage, you're lucky it happened that way because I once read of a guy on Ford Trucks Enthusiast who started his up and it was pinned. It took him a few seconds to realize what the problem was before he shut it down. To make a long story short (and because I can't remember exactly what happened), he paid for that little mistake.
