KB piston ring gap help Please!

9717 Views 16 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Mark O'Neal
I have a set of 22cc dish 4.40 bore KB pistons. Directions have me reading them over and over again. I can't seem to find 2nd ring gap or oil ring gap. My math may be wrong but my top ring gap using the application "Street Towing" gap factor of 0.0080" is 4.40 bore X .0.0080 = 0.0352"

I have tried to download a copy of the directions, however, it says it is too large and I do not have a photo bucket account to post it here.

I would appreciate any help on this. If anyone would be willing to post the directions, I could e-mail it to you.

Thanks

Hyper pistons do need a wider gap. .035 sounds about right. you can always call Keith Black tech line and talk to them. I'm sure you can find their number on their website. Randy.

The wide top ring gap applies to the KB hypereutectic pistons, it does not apply to the forged pistons (you did not give your piston part number so we don't know your piston material). Believe it or not, yes, the 0.035" is indeed the callout for the KB hyper top ring in your boresize.

The lower rings take standard end gaps, not the big gap as called out by KB for the top ring ONLY.

Wow, guys. Thanks for the fast reply. Sorry. Yes, their hypereutectic pistons. KB 152-040. If my top ring is 0.035" what would be my 2nd ring and oil rings gaps? This i my first build from crank up & I'm real new at this apparently. Thanks for the help.

Top ring on that piston is .007" per inch of bore size if NA. (4.39" x .007" = .031" MINIMUM)
2nd ring around .022" and oil ring rails at .020" MINIMUM will be fine.
Well I called Keith Black today. Directions really suck. desn't say crap about a bump on the support ring for the oil rings and there is no bump on the supports I have. Bump on the rings keep support ring from rotating the gap into the wrist pin access. Pin access goes through oil ring, with that said they are sending me the correct support oil ring.

But how do I know that the rest of the rings are correct? For instance, my middle oil ring, I believe it's called the expander ring, will not fit in the bore. I would have to take at least 30-35 thousands off to get it in and that would mean butted in, and this should push out the 2 other oil rings too much. Should there be a little gap between ends of expanding ring? The directions do not say anything about the 2nd ring gap or factor.

I'm going with close to what RMCOMRANDY & PAUL reccomended. But still not a 100% sure on that 2nd ring. I used to think these pistons blew up because people installed them wrong & didn't follow the directions. Now I see the directions suck. My JE PISTON came with not even a half page of directions and was better.

Keith Black TEC LINE was reading me stuff that was not even on my directions and said that it should be. Wrong directions? Pistons and rings came from same source, all say KB. Part numbers are right.

You might think about a local engine builder.
I ran a set of KB hypers in my last motor (545) and didn't have any problems following the directions... sounds like you may have the wrong size rings. The oil ring groove in them was not large enough for the oil rings and the support rings, so I left the support rings out and it was fine. I did have to remove the little plastic knob thingys on the ends of the oil expander ring.

I didn't want to fool with all that mess and just bought a set of Probes this time around.
Marc O'Neal You are the type of idiot that should not respond to people's posts. First off, they are sending a whole new ring set because they are not the right rings and they admit that and they further said I don't have the right instructions. I build Audi motors far more complicated than this 460. So why don't you figure out what these three letter stand for. G.F.Y.

As for Keith Black, I must say that their customer service was very good. they do not package the rings, and I forget who makes them, but they made good on it.
Big Block Ranger. I forget what those plastic pieces are called but they are not on my expander ring. Kind of makes me wonder how many people got the wrong rings or how many changes they made.

lmao yeah, Mark knows NOTHING about pistons and rings... ;) ;)

I do know they have changed the pistons a bit. My first set of 8 had a locator pin in the oil ring groove and the groove was not wide enough for the support rings. When I had to get one replacement piston because of a stupid oversight, it did not have a locator pin and the oil ring groove was wide enough for the support rings. If the pistons do have the locator pin, you have to cut the lower oil ring rails to make them work because they will not fit otherwise.

Mark ... don't you know that ANYBODY can be an engine builder ... just ask 'em.

Especially if you can do one type ... you can do 'em all.

(Was that a bit facetious...? It was meant to be.)

Your probably right. What the hell do I know?

I said that because you seem to not have the basic knowledge required to build an engine. A local Engine builder might be willing to help you out.

But you are free to be as big an *** as you'd like.

Also it's not Marc..it's Mark.

I'm not gay.
WOW!! MOREMORE that's a bit harsh .. It was Marks help he gave me and answered my questions through this board why i bought his PROBE pistons.. Couldn't have been more helpful.

He offered for me to buy from him direct or his Australian dealers which i ended up doing. Very happy customer this end and great product.

Do a little search here and find out who Mark is ;)

I've used those KB hyper pistons and had a very good run with them too . Good you got the issue sorted
You are right. I don't know what I need to know. And alot of you know more than me about this and I asked a question knowing that. Maybe I should have bought the piston from you. Maybe you wouldn't be a wise ?SS or are you that way to your customers Marc :p? Obviously not. If I had worked with this piston before, I would have known I had the wrong rings and directions. I got the correct rings yesterday. That was one day. Called Monday. Got Tuesday which was fast on their part.

Just because he is friends with you guys, doesn't mean he can be a wise ?SS. This trend asks for ring help, not engine builder. Do you see anything in his post pertaining to rings that's helpful, besides MOREMORE?
I'm a wise ***. It's what I do.

Apparently you don't care for it.

Stick with KB. I can't fix stupid.
