im trying to figure which ones came with the hideaway head lights between the years 70-73. one of our members has a gorgeous gold convertible with a 521 in it. thats the year im interested in. what are the differences in the 500 xl and the other models?

Thanks for the kind words on my '69 XL convertible. The '70 model differs in both the front and rear treatment, but is basically the same frame and body; '70 marked the final year for hideaway headlites until they reappeared again on the '75 LTD models. I am partial to the '69 model as they look very similar to a '69 Torino from the rear, but have there own unique hideaway headlights that were meaner looking than the '70 model, in my opinion.

The '69 and '70 XL's were avaliable in both a Sportsroof(think '69 Torino Sportsroof with resessed rear window) and a convertible. The XL's, LTD's and Country Squire wagons had the hideaways, all other models had exposed headlights. After 1970, no Sportsroof models were available, however, the convertible continued a few more years, through '72, as an LTD model(no hideaways).

Here are pics. of both my Champagne Gold '69 XL '521' convertible and my Royal Maroon '69 XL GT 429-4V 4-speed convertible. Out of the 37 4-speed GT convertibles built in '69, the Marti report states that it is the only one produced in this color combination. 1969 marked the final year that the Toploader 4-speed would be available in a full-size Ford. The only way you could get a 4-speed was to also order the optional 429-4V. The only other 4-speed GT convertible I know to exist is rotted to the ground. Out of almost 1 million full-size cars produced in '69, less than 1000 were 4-speeds.

thanx for all the info trickflowrick, both of your cars are beatiful. do you have any front and rear pics of your cars i love that grill and headlights. what size are those torque thrusts?

Rick,

Good job on maintaining such a beautiful collection of Galaxies! I think the red GT is my favorite, maybe even over the firebreathing hardtop you're currently working on. Awesome :D

Are parts hard to find for these cars? I know where there's a 68? XL body that originally had a 428 and 4-speed (I don't recall it being a GT) but it's green with a green interior, and there's some chrome damaged, and the interior is in pretty bad shape. The car was bought by a Shelby restorer for the eng and trans. The 428 4-speed Galaxy XL would have to be pretty rare correct?

The '65-'69 cars are just starting to come around. The '68 XL 4-speeds are rare, the GT's even rarer, but most are still looking after the '63-'64 Galaxies. Like you said, the Shelby restorer takes a rare 4-speed Galaxie and uses the drivetrain to make a clone Shelby or something. That is how most still view these cars, as big block drivetrain donors. It takes a certain buyer to take on a project like the one you are looking at. Yes, the parts for the '68 and '69 cars are harder to find and very few reproduction parts exists; up to $250 for 1 NOS wheel opening molding. :shock:

yeah, tell me about it...
The job on my '68 XL has been a lot more challenging than say restoring a early mustang. Its just amazing how pretty much every sheetmetal panel and bolt is reproduced for those, while I'm digging in bone yards and or trying to repair/rejuvenate some other parts that I can't find just anywhere.
With that said, at the end of the day, I think I'll feel better driving something unique on the road.

TrickFlowRick, what offset are you running on those ARE TT rims?
I'm currently running 17x8 and having to run some spacers in the front to clear things. I would *LOVE* to fit some 17x11's and 315's in the rear of mine! I'm still drooling over your convertible. Awesome '69 by the way. You just gave me a new background for my desktop!

Thanks for the kind words. The car is really dirty in those front and rear shots...but it is a driver. :lol: The 17x8's are off the shelf and fit nice. I believe the backspace is 6-1/4 or 6-1/2" on the 17x11's and they are a custom offset ARE as you mentioned. Keep in mind, the '69 had a revised disc brake system up front and also the rear quarters were opened up a few inches over the '68. The 315's would look bad *** on your '68. 8)
