friend has a mid 80 302.put in a comp 270 cam/224 @050 .5 lift.has stock springs which were shimmed.said the lifter preload does not need to be checked with stock rockers/bolt down.i think it needs checked and or shimmed and coil bind checked due to shims under springs.any opinions on this.

You are totally correct ... production lifter preload is somewhere near the center of the travel of the lifter plunger with the production base circle camshaft.
It'll probably run without setting it to make it correct but, for high performance you are certainly leaving some performance on the table. As for shimmed, stock valve springs -- good luck...!
