Hello

I have a older shovel head harley and would like to do some research on where to look for some horsepower increases. I know NOTHING about these things so I need to start with the basics. Would like to see some flow charts on shovel heads vs after market stuff. Any comments are welcome.

I'm repairing a set of aftermarket Shovel head style Harley heads right now for a customer. I think I would spend some time and do some research as to what really works for valvetrain on these engines. This one had the intake guides absolutely killed. The exhausts looked fine. It had hung an intake valve and this bent the exhaust valve. Right now I'm trying to find some new guides for the intake side and some new valves.

Valvetrain geometry looks awful with a high lift cam.

It's funny you brought that up. I am getting ready to do a top end on this. I was told by the old timers there is a real issue with the valve train, dropping valves and the fact it is still set up for leaded gas. I will do some reading.
