i have a 1975 lincoln conti 4 door lead sled. the 460 in it has 215 hp and its just sad to think all those cubs and so lil power. i have looked into a stock 1968-70 429 [360 hp] and a 69-71 460 [385 hp]. i ahve standard c-6 and 2.73 9 inch. since this is gonna be a daily driver and i want to run pumpgas in it i am wondering if building a 460 to make tourque vs high rpm hp is best the majoirty of life this engine will see is aorund the 3k rmp modeand i have rarely had it above 5k so hp at 5.5k to me is meaningless in this application. corect me if i am worng but the higher trq numbers are gona be more important. remeber this is not a racer its a long range cruiser for trips to beach 4 hrs and to atlanta 4.5 hrs and a tailgater. but whne i need to pass soeone of if i get some jackass beside me at a stoplight i wanna be able to drop the hammer!!!!!! i have looked at the eldebrok proformer package [intake cam heads and carb] and am wonderinug if i use an early block beefed up if this will do what i want. any help is greatly aprecated

Hello, I like your car and how you are thinking, but know this. The 460 in your car has a static compression ratio of about 7.8 to 1. So if you put a bigger camshaft in it, the performance will likley suffer. In this case, use the stock camshaft. And use oil suitable for a flat tappet camshaft. And that is not standard off the shelf oil anymore.

Also know that the horsepower figures you a quoting for the earlier years engines are gross ratings and that the horsepower figure for your Lincoln is a net rating. With some proper manipulation on your present engine, you will be pleasantly surprised.

The first manipulation to your engine is to swap out your present timing chain and gears for a 1971 or earlier double roller timing chain and steel gears that will advance your cam 8* like in the earlier engines. Retarding the cam 8* was done in an attempt to help emissions. What retarding the cam 8* did was to kill gas millage and performance.

Second is to properly curve your distributor. If you do not know how to do it yourself, send it to Scotty, known as the "Mad Porter" here on this site. Many people here can do it, but Scotty makes it part of his advertised business. This will bring on your torque much quicker and sharper.

Third, do not replace your intake manifold. I am not aware of an intake manifold that can out torque the stocker below the 3200RPM to 3500 rpm range. Use your present carburetor, it will work well if in proper tune. Rember that this is not to be a high HP engine, but a right now torque engine.

Fourth, the exhaust. Call Stan at Ford Performance Applications (FPA) and get a set of his ceramic coated headers. First class hardware and perfect for your application. Behind the headers, run 2 1/2" pipes, either a "H" pipe or an "X" pipe with straight thru mufflers. You must run tail pipes behind the straight thru mufflers and they will be reasonably quiet and pleasant sounding.

Fifth, replace your 2.75 rear gear with a 3.25 gear and Trac-Loc.

All right. You do these operations as listed above and you will be amazed for your application. Do not leave any steps out.
