excuse my ignorance but is this distributer the "curved" type?
Yes, the distributor has a mechanical spark advance (aka curve) that is adjustable to suit the needs of the engine, both in the total amount of spark advance and the rate that the advance occurs in relation to the engine RPM.

And if I understand correctly this distributed cannot be used with the stock ignition module but must be used with a MSD ignition module?

The MSD distributor has a magnetic trigger internal to the distributor very similar to the Ford Duraspark trigger. The instructions that come with the distributor show how to wire the distributor to a factory Ford ignition amplifier. It also works very well with one of the MSD ignition boxes like a 6AL.
