Well where do I start. First thanks to all the guys that helped in ANY way like Livemore Dave’s “Clean” drain pan and Dan Hobbs Expert decal installing. BIG thanks to Blake and Mike for helping with the tranny problems. I sure wish I could have run the first round to see what happens.

We got in early Thursday morning, got pitted and went to register and I’m given car number 9697 …. I get my membership package so then I need permanent numbers…… well guess what, they don’t have 9’s or 6’s and I’m to check back a little later. Long story short, they don’t have 9’s or 6’s so now I have to wait for the Vinyl guy to get here on Friday. Vinyl guy doesn’t show until LATE morning and I don’t’ get my decals until 12:45 or so. Can’t run without the permanent numbers. So by the time I get all these decals and numbers on the car T&T is over and it’s 3pm grrrrrrrrrr………. I wanted to make one full T&T pass at the 6800 shift point to see what that car will run all out before trying to dial it back. Oh well……….

The First run, some of you guys have seen on the video thread that Jon (Richter69) started. I was telling Blake and Red about how I’m not in second gear very long before having to shift into Third. (I haven't seen the video yet and can't because of this firewall), well that first pass I moved my shift point down to 6500 from 6800 and according to my data the car should have run slower BUT it ran faster and I had 3 more mph just by putting the J20C spec fluid in the tranny. So who knows how fast it would have went if the tranny was working correctly..... maybe a 9.49?

In the past when shifting at 6500 the car should have run around a 6.20 and a 9.70 or in that range.

Saturday: Second qualifying pass: I move my shift point back to 6800 and will shut it down at the 1/8 mile so I don’t go any faster, my Dial will already be 9.49 now. Well I launch and cut a .030 light and a 1.359 short time, best ever with these wheelie bars attached. I shift into second and the engine hits the rev limiter! NOT GOOD! I shut it down and limp back to the pits. Under a load second gear is GONE however cruising back to the pits the tranny works fine???

I check the shifter linkage (I had installed a new shifter cable before) and everything lines up correctly? I tighten up the shifter cable position by 2 revolutions to see if that helps.

Third qualifying pass I launch the car (Time slip is still in the car) and I cut a -.019 light in the right lane (Other 2 passes were in the left lane) and the car goes another 1.37 short time and then I hit second gear……. It engages and I’m thinking GREAT IT’s WORKING! But then I realize as I cross the 1/8 mile marker that the tranny is in Third gear and shut it down… What the Hell!?!?!

After talking with Blake and Mike (Tranny specialist) we decide to drop the pan and valve body to check the bands, clutches etc……. During all this mess my wife hasn’t got to see the jet car up close so I go with her to the stands while Blake and Mike check the tranny. A LOT of clutch and band material in the pan. Mike offered to rebuild the tranny right there that night but I decided to take Tracy to Rafferty’s instead, she deserved a break from all the heat plus that’s where all the BBF guys were going.

Next morning I’m thinking that my class doesn’t run until 10AM, I was going to shift it like a glide, First to Third and let her PULL from a 7000 shift point instead. Never got a chance, My class ran FIRST at 8:50 AM and I didn’t realize it until we got to the track and I saw the Open Comp cars going down the track…….. BUMMER!


I qualified #14 with a .012 light but never made eliminations. I'm fairly confident that I would have smoked these turkeys ;-)


Chuck's weekend was bitter sweet. His first time run he ran a 6.74 and then we got Phillip over to work on his carb. Phillip got on the phone with Lem and together they diagnosed Chuck's carb issues and the plug fouling issues. They changed all his air bleeds, readjusted his idle in the front and back and BAM it picked up .15 seconds and 3.5 mph! In the very next time run with identical weather and track conditions! He was a HAPPY camper! But during eliminations Chuck had problems with reaction times and his box. He didn't know that he had to cross over to the slower cars light on the top bulb or something. So he was out in the first round.

When I left, Phillip and Dan Hobbs raced each other and Phillip was the winner, don't know how far he got. My friend Derrick made it into the money rounds in Bracket 1.

You CAN'T miss the next one! Some BAD Mustangs! Wait 'til you see some of the videos and pictures I snapped.


I had a really good time meeting new and old friends from the BBF Forum. Lem kept all of us entertained Saturday. Blakes friend Red kept me in stitches with his King of the Hill Impersonations :lol: :lol: :lol: "Damn It Bobby!" :p
Plus they fed me Friday morning. We had Chuck-Donald's Saturday morning. Many of us pitted together so it was a really good time!

Looking forward to the next get together! BTW: we all wore our BBF Bash T-shirts with pride 8)

Thanks for the update Damon. The video of your car is pretty good, that left front tire was reaching for the sky! Might be some more suspension adjustments needed?
Let me know if you take it to Ohio Valley any more this year.

Would love to go to the valley but most likely I'm done for the year. Unless Blake keeps twisting my arm and makes me put his glide in my car to see if I like the glide 8)

It was great meeting you this weekend Damon. All of the guys made us feel very welcome and a part of a great community here. Everyone was so nice and very helpful. Thanks again Chuck for letting us use your drain pan, We were glad to find someone prepared enough to have one. It did suck just having to load everything up and watch everyone else getting to race but we had a overall great time. Rafferty's was awesome Saturday night hearing all the old war stories of races gone by. Was a pleasure meeting all of you Damon, Charlie, The Lawyer family, Dave, Chuck, and Blake. Hopefully we will tear this thing down this weekend and look over the motor to see what all is going on. I think dad is going to try to call Lem this week to talk about getting us a new motor put together. I'm still trying to talk him into a 512 stroker we shall see how that turns out. But again it was great meeting all of you and any that I might have missed I am sorry but its good to be able to put a face with a name now.

Same hear, it was great to meet you and sorry about your oil pressure issues. 512? you need to go BIGGER :lol: Cost will be the same. go ahead and get a 4.3" crank and make it a 521 - 533 :idea:

Darren,

We missed you guys too. Tracy would have liked to meet Danica. We swapped more bench racing stories, laughed at Red and his King of the Hill impersonations (we are still laughing about that). We will see you guys soon! Tracy had so much fun that she is already planning to attend our next gathering.

Screw that i'm not waiting until next time! i'm bringing my car down for a tune up by my southern brothers in the south. Hey Lem you ready to pull an all night-er on my car?

Damon I hope that man cave is done soon me and my son is going to need some place to sleep! Chuck get the grill ready big man cause Big D is coming to town and he's bringing his 8 second (yeah right :)) out of tune Mustang with him!

Bring it on Big D, maybe I'll have my car with me: glide or C6 installed :idea:

Forgot to mention: I plugged in the run information last night. My laptop says that my first qualifying run should have been a 6.21 at a 6500 shift point in the 1/8 whereas my car ran a 6.12 instead. Some of the improvement is due to the better short times and some due to the converter locking up sooner because of the J20C spec fluid.

On a side note, Chuck told me that Phillip got runner up in Bracket 1 driving Bobby Smalls 04 Mustang, the BAD *** blue one you guys saw on the BBF Bash DVD.

The offer still stands, But I feel like a red headed step child for running it . Seems most people on this board are against them being in a Ford and don't mind telling you.

I have ran both in my car, and run the 1/8 mile mostly. I have found that when you have a high torque engine geared to use all three gears to the shift points through the 1/8th , your first gear final ratio is way to steep. violent launches, wheel stands or wheel spin. Hard to control the launch.

I am not a chassis expert so the glide helped me in that department.

I figure if the chevy guys can run our 9" rear I can run a glide .

Damon your car shifted from first 2.46.1 to a third gear 1.1 ratio and didn't lose any time. If it has enough torque to overcome that kind of a ratio difference , then I can't believe a glide wouldn't pick the car up some.

What I meant by that is typically I shift at 6800 but I shifted at 6500 instead in order to slow the car down. Based on a previous run when I shifted at 6500 the car should have run slower by .09 to .1 seconds in the 1/8. It will be interesting to see how a glide affects my cars performance :idea:

If you had a transmission problem that 300 rpm probably does not show you how much power was being blown out the headers on a full pass. I bet the glide will slow you down. You are going to lose a lot of gearing in the first 60'.

I am not trying to discouraging you from trying the glide . It will be interesting to see the results , thats just my opinion 8) . Make the car lighter and it will run like a striped apes hind end :D
