Hopefully within a few days I will find out if I got a new job in LA.
Specifically the Hawthorne area. SE of LAX.
No I'd like to find a small nice SAFE apartment to rent within a reasonable close distance.
with a reasonable rent payment under 1000/mth
I've heard alot of bad things about living in the central LA region.
Heard that Hawthorne is bad, El Segundo, gardena, inglewood, and cities east are all bad.

Have also heard that PARTS of Torrance are OK
and that Holly Glen area of Hawthorne is OK.

What about San Pedro? Apartments there are not too expensive.
and is right by coastal areas, which typically are better because they all want tourist $$

So any residents of LA want to chime in and give me some insider info?
I'd be moving from Phoenix.

thanks for info

This job better really be worth it to move from America to mexico!! (Phoenix to Los Angeles)
All the things that you have heard about LA are true...it is a very bad area, but the Torrance area is better for sure.

Im not in the LA area, but I've been all over it, and many parts are down right scarry!!
Stay away from Compton, Watts, Inglewood, Lynnwood, and parts of Long Beach. Sorry I cant be of more specific help, but every time I have to go to places like that, I carry some big lead with me!
Good luck.
I left the LA AREA IN 1991 I lived 1 block off the 405 on willow st in Signal Hill Ca and worked 7 milles straight up the 405 across the street where they park the Goodyear Blimp on a good morning it only took 1/2 hour to get to work most mornings it took at least an hour. My Daughter went to school at Poly High in Long Beach it literaly got to the point where she was afraid to goto school with all the gang actitivy occuring. I miss the climate and the beaches but dont miss all the traffic and people. Indiana dont have much going for it but it is a nice place to live and raise kids

If you can afford to do so, check out the beach communities just south of LAX, such as Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, etc. Great cities, nice people, laid back attitude, and really good weather without getting hot all the damn time. And the overall vibe is very different from the greater surrounding Los Angeles area.

Commuting will usually be the unpleasant part of living there.
Greater LA Area

How come nobody suggested Watts??!!! Only kidding!! I spent years down there for the Super Shops chain, the better areas to live are the beach areas , Costa Mesa is nice, Orange County is nice, many areas are expensive (New Port Beach) The "Valley area" (Van Nuys) has some nice spots. Venice is nice but costly. Most of the areas I mentioned are away from your job area, but better places to live. A 2 hour bumper to bumper drive to work is common in the greater LA area. Remember road rage was invented there. I did it for awhile, and soon you realize your work day is 8hrs + 4hrs commute + 12 hr work day = not worth the money. Everything is more expensive here, water, car registration, gas (highest in the nation) taxes, it goes on and on. I would check the price of car insurance before moving too. I'm not trying to talk you out of what might be a good job, its just I have lived all over the country, and I'd move out of CA. if I didn't have such a good job! I lived in Georgia, and got transfered back to CA. And at the same wage had less "fun" money every month. Check things very very closely before you fully commit yourself, The quality of life you have now might be better. Learn Spanish too.

living in LA

I have looked alot into the coast areas and they really are the decent places to live. dang expensive though!!!
but hopefully the company will pay well enough to make it afforadable.
I don't want to be driving for 2 hr each way to get to work especially since they already said I would be working for 10-12 hrs everyday right from the beginning...
all indications point to areas west of hawthorne, and south.
except long beach.

Good Long Beach Story

Back in the 1980's Super Shops had a store right on Pacific Coast Highway, a very busy store. I was working there as part of a training day and around 5 pm right in front of the store 2 cars crashed head on into each other! As the dust and flying parts settled we could see both cars were full of people and they were just staring at each other with huge eyes. Then every car door flew open and everybody ran!! A few minutes a cop shows up, and asks "Where are the victims?" Suddenly it dawns on him, he jots down both cars license numbers and goes back to his vehicle to run them. BOTH cars were stolen!! And all the criminals were now where to be found. The wrecks were towed off.... The greater so-cal area has the best crazy people stories in the world, I should write a book...
