Looking at an f150 4x4 this morning. C6, 351M (yech). I can figure out the motor, trans body etc, have no idea on how to check anything related to the 4wd as I've never had one. Anything special to look for???

Truck is supposed to only have 94K miles with original working A/C, clean interior, typical rust and no lift kit.

i'd check all the yokes at the axles,t-case to make sure they're tight, the slip yokes on the driveshafts and the axle joints.i'd then put it in 4 wheel and find some dirt and spin the tires to make sure the front drive is working.then i'd drive it down the road in 4 wheel to make sure there are no bad vibrations/squeeling noises.

these trucks were well built and if taken care even moderately should still be solid.except for the body's of course, they dissapear over time.

looked at it this morning - strong drive train - put it in a bind on concrete (4wd high locked hubs tight turn) with no pops just tire slides.

Bad ball joint and busings on what looks like a pan hard bar up front.

Body really sucked, dented up and a strap held the bed from flopping side to side at the tailgate.

That 351m is a dog. The motor ran pretty strong, but I think the Chevette I had in high school was faster.

ON mine..

When I bought my 78 , it had the same worn out bushings. I got some polyurethane stuff from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard. ( I think) It replaced the Panhard bushing you mentioned plus the radius arms (including the C bushings) and the bushing under the transfer case. REALLY tightened up the front end. When I had the transmission rebuilt and asked about the transfer case (NP 205) the guy told me, "Put it in and run it like it is. " No problems at all. Somehow mine also had traction lock in the front and back.  My 351M disappeared in favor of a 460. :D

Most likelt you'll have to go through the front end. C bushing's, radius arm bushing's, ball joint's, and axle joint's. Usually that's a pretty good bet when you buy one that's been used pretty good. The NP 205 case and C6 are a pretty bullet proof set up in those truck's.

We'll see what happens - I made a pass at it and the guy want to much money - maybe he'll call me maybe he won't. Just have to wait and see.

If I get the truck the 351M will definitely go away!!!!!!

got a big boat?

i've had a couple "m"'s yuck.had one 400 that was ok,just sounded like the pistons were changing holes when you revved it up.

385 series engines are my preference tho you can get a "m" to run with a little tlc.
