Ok, I have been working on Fords since I was 14 (over 20 years). I worked as a partmans for a bunch of years, worked at a race car fabrication shop when I was at SAIT and pretty much a car guy all my life. Awhile back a friend of mine (owns a Camaro) changed his cam with the help of one of his other Chevy friends and he was telling me how he had to 'punch' the distributor. Is this a southern term as I have never heard it or read it before. I had to ask what the hell he was talking about but he meant putting in the distributor as much as I can tell. The guy is my best friend but my wife knows more about cars than he does. He likes to talk about **** like he knows something but I think he comes off sounding foolish sometimes.

I suppose if I had a chev I would want to punch the crap out of it. LOL. LOL. :lol: :lol: :lol:

I know a guy like that. I think I'll "toss" on a new carb, or "slap" on some new shocks. Like you can open up the hood and throw it in there. These guys don't work on cars much and it shows. :roll:

Maybe he was meaning to "stab" the dizzy in.... Punch, stab, maime all roughly mean the same thing....

What KILLS me are the people who can't name the correct part and just blatantly misname parts. My computer at the dealership can't look up "hogsheads", "dohickies", "thingamajigs", and other absurd terms...... but maybe I am too idealistic in thinking that correct naming gets correct parts.

Chock sobbers?? That one got me ....shock absorbers..
How about some Chromium vinyl covers....valve covers..
I don't miss selling parts.... :lol: :lol: :!:

I'm not going to miss it in a few days... Going out into the shop and away from the dazzled droolers......

I used to run a parts store in the Detroit inner city (actually Highland Park). Actually were good repair guys down there, and a fair amount of fun to work with. I needed a translator though...Try diagnosing this (real):

"When I mash down on the foot feed it skeetches and takes up slack like it's poundin' sand..."

Translation:
When I hit the gas the fan belt squeals, and then the car accelerates slowly with a repetitive dead miss..."

I used to work the counter too. I kinda miss it - and kinda not.

"I need point, plugs, condenser for my Chevy truck."
"'K, what year, model?"
"That red one there in front."
We won't see you back again for a while.

"I needs slick for my duce-and-a-quarter" Translation - Needs oil for an Electra 225.

Sold a lot of 3/4 race cams. Mostly hydro race, but still race. Dem cars would do wheel stands on a brick road.

My favorite all time customer - buys a starter for a Pinto (IIRC) or Vega - one with three bolts anyway. Has to change it in the parking lot. Removes two bolts, pries the old starter off the block with a crow bar. Core comes in with a piece of block still attached. The guy was as big as an F-150, so no laughing until he cleared the street.

We were a chain and the poor new guys got a flood of calls for muffler bearings, throw-out bearing for an Eldorado, 66 Beetle water pumps, blinker fluid, disk brakes for a B-52, etc.

PS - how to tell an old time parts counter person: Toss 'em a condenser. If they don't catch it, they used to work the counter.
