on my current project 66 f100 sb 521 c6 gear vendors over under i wonder about using a 4 core 460 radiator that i have had run thru the radiator shop. problem is i didn't think about it being a std transmission radiator with no provision to hook up automatic transmission lines. realized it too late. i had the radiator redone several years ago. would you run and after market cooler without the radiator precooling the transmission fluid? or abandon the idea and go with a new aluminum radiator and a transmission cooler? thanks.

I'm using a stack plate cooler I pulled from a large motor home. It's mounted in front of the radiator where it does the most good. Dimensions are around 12x12.

i have several transmission coolers to choose from that i have salvaged over the years but will they work sufficiently if i decide to drive the h**l out of it without running transmission fluid thru the radiator. i am also considering installing the oil cooler from a 73 460 PI galaxy still in the car. but that would be a little more difficult to hook up but i think it would work ok. just considering the options. will be installing the engine in a test stand today. hopefully breakin will be accomplished this week. the frame is waiting . all modification are done. cab is finished. ready to install. bed is in epoxy primer. transmission and OD is rebuilt and assembled. with some luck i could be running and driving by eoy. that is my goal. started frame modifications 15 months ago.

If you’re unsure that your trans cooler is up to the task go find one from a mid 2000’s 6.0L Diesel Excursion or F series truck.

This is just opinion, but if you believe what Ford recommends you will bypass the used stuff and just buy a new cooler. Ford recommends cleaning used coolers with heated (140 degree) fluid to dislodge the cake that hangs onto the walls of the cooler tubing. I would be hesitant of sending that junk into my $$$$ C6 transmission.

i have a 545 blown 871 fuel injected motor with a c6 and all I use is a dual pass oil cooler from summit for number 6 lines and a inline 160 degree switch to turn on a 12" spal fan in my trunk and my beast runs fine, I have no provisions for a oil cooler in the radiator and I am running a afco dual pass.

that's what i was looking for. i will rig up something in front of the radiator with an inch clearance. i may put air conditioning in this truck also. space is at a premium in front of the radiator so i will see what will work as i continue. got bullet mounted in run stand. valve covers on. wired in duraspark. headers on today. ordered a new starter. waiting on valve cover grommets and hardware. almost there. thanks for clarifying. i have no experience on new stuff. still stuck 20 years ago.

careful what you put in front of the radiator as it will reduce the cooling efficiency, also get some Sheetmetal and fab you up a little air dam to direct air up into the radiator from the bottom if you add a oil cooler in front.

yup, this is why we never mount the trans cooler in front of it
