Rear Housing Dimensions

A friend gave me a set of 31 spline axles. Said they came out of a early mustang. My question is how do you determine the dimension of a housing using the measurement of the axles?

Thanks

There should be 1-1/8 between the axles and each axle has a brake offset of 2-1/2 or 2-3/8. Subtract the total of these from the total of both axles to get the housing length. Housing = axle + axle - 5 or 4-3/4.
Tom,

While this was not your question, it may help you to determine which year mustang the axles were originally made for if it matters.

The 1970 mustang was the first to have 31 spline axles. The length of those axles were 31 4/32 on the right axle and 27 1/16 on the left.

In 1971 through 1973, the 31 spline axle are 31 25/32 on the right and 27 13/16 on the left.

Hope this helps.

That was everything I needed to know. The axles came out of a 69 Boss mustang. I just need to get another housing. If I can't find one local then I will make my own.

Thanks Guys
