Do you Run in Sanctioned Events? Aren't their Rule books covering thebar sizing?

NHRA stuff Is typicaly 1 5/8 .134 wall in Mild Steel and .083 in Chrome Moly

I would step up and get the good stuff, remember it is your hide inside that cage. Get some proper roll cage pipe. It isn't cheap, but neither is a trip to the hospital, or worse yet permanent damage or loss of life. I don't know what your rules say, but I'll bet the techs would frown on anything less than seamless tubing, and yes they can tell. 8)

Guess it all depends on the type of racing & the class rules.

And just to clarify a common misconception, the so called "seamless" mild steel tubing (D.O.M.) isn't truly a seamless product. Mild steel D.O.M tubing does in fact have a weld seam, you just cant see it after the seamed tubing is cold worked drawn over a mandrel during the manufacturing process. The cold working process removes the visible seam (inside & out) and is what makes the tubing reach it's tighter required finish tolerances.

For drag racing use, most any "true" mild steel tubing with a visible weld seam is perfectly fine/legal to use for NHRA/IHRA & some of the SFI classes. For the mud truck stuff getting a rule book would be the best idea because they might be way different from what is acceptable for drag racing.

As far as using the "pipe" goes, if this is truly an iron sch 40 "pipe" your thinking about using I wouldn't use it because real "iron pipe" isn't as ductile/flexable as "steel tubing" is.

oh ea they dont say in the rules what type of pipe to use but i saw a guy use some masons staging to mmake his role cage so i dont think that they are to concerned with the material u use

im not sayin im not concerned that is why i am asking you guys i do not want to get hurt but i am on a budget hhere and would like to do the roll cage proper does any one have any sugesetions

The SFI books description of what is considered acceptable "mild steel" tubing goes something like this......

mild steel (carbon/alloy), seamed or seamless, round tubing (including hot rolled (HREW), cold rolled (CREW), cold mandrel drawn (DOM), hot finished, cold worked, etc, etc, round tubing) meeting ASTM A519 or A513 requirements.

But again just because some material is accepted by SFI/NHRA/IHRA doesn't mean all other forms of racing will also agree 100%.

When I built my cage I looked up NHRA specs for tubing and that is what I ran, my case I used seamed mild steel .134 wall and only got checked once in mud drags (they had a sonic tester and checked it in 2 places, both where actually .142 on mine) and they only checked the guys entering the open class.

NMRO requires a minimum .090x 1 1/2" tubing. If you built your roll cage to there specs, you could compete anywhere without a problem.

The only type of pipe that I have heard referred to as 1 1/2" sch 40 would be (black) gas pipe, or (galvanized) for electrical conduit. Both of these types of pipe are easy to bend by hand, and I would not trust them for a cage. DOM, HREW, or CREW is tubing and a lot stiffer. If your rule book doesn't state exact type of tubing to use, do as the others have said and refer to sanctioning bodies that do specify. 8)

People around here buy a mild steel tubing at the local steel yard that is heavier than muffler tubing and the local circle track thinks it O.K. I does bend somewhat easy with a JD style bender. Nothing like conduit, stay away from that. The galvinize coating is also very poisonious when welded. My S&W cage is much heavier tubing. I also have an Autopower brand cage in my SVO and SCCA does measure the wall thickness before a log book is issued to the chassis. That tubing is very stout and heavy. Tres...
