Well you recall that 67 T-bird I got. well it's looking pretty sorry and plucked clean about now.
about only things left on it are the interior.
still got plenty of parts to sell..
But anyway..
The engine and trans are out.
and the block has alot of rust on the water jackets.
Around here it's pretty typical to not run antifreeze in engines. Why, well it never freezes!
SO straight water and this motor has been sitting for 15 years.
the freeze plug behind the starter rusted out and looking down the inlets behind the water pump is ALOT of rust and scale.

my fear is that this maybe a rebuilt motor but it'll be an over heating puke when it actually runs.
Any good chemicals to recommend I could pour into it to dissolve out the rust some?
I am planning on pulling all the freeze plugs and using the screw driver and wire pick method to get as much as possible out.
but I can't get to the heads or the intake.

Ideas?

thanks guys.

some years ago a friend of mine had a badly over heating van. and he got a hold of some nitric acid and poured that in with water and ran it.
IT sure dissolved the rust . the next day he washed it out. I saw a thick almost sludge of rust muck wash out of that engine.
Cured the overheat problem, no problems after that...
I wonder if pool acid (muriatic aka hydrochloric) might work the same way.
pour it in and let it sit for a day or so...
engine is just sitting on the deck of my trailer now..

Yes, the pool Murratic acid will break up the rust and leave you with a clean water jacket area.

You will need to flush it out with high pressure water several times to get all the rust and scale out of the block.
Remove all the freeze plugs and just have a blast.

Yes thank you for the warning, but the timing cover on a 390 is dry, only in contact with oil.
I will head over to the pool supply and get a jug of muriatic acid.
got nothing to loose I figure and my neighbor has a pressure washer!!

Woohoo!
